I’m Happy Not To Be Going On Holiday Today!

Well, that’s not something I say very often!

Yesterday, we woke up to a winter wonderland. Overnight, a pretty hefty blanket of snow had covered my house, garden and surrounding area. Suddenly, all local schools were closed (much to the children’s delight), motorway at a standstill, trains and buses cancelled and even the postal deliveries stopped. By chance, yesterday was my day off and as my husband couldn’t get to his place of work, we had an unexpected day together to enjoy the natural beauty of freshly fallen snow.

Snow is beautiful, especially when untouched. When you have the luxury of just being able to admire the view from a window or go out for a walk or maybe a more energetic snowman build or snowball fight it is a delight. Unfortunately, if you have to attempt to drive or get public transport as you need to get somewhere, it can be a nightmare.

Yesterday, local travel advise was to only go out if essential. This then starts the discussion of what is essential. There are certain professions that are essential such as medical staff and our emergency services but what about after that? Should a shop worker or a carpenter or an accountant for example risk their lives attempting to get to work in extreme weather conditions?

And what about going on holiday? What happens when you get snow the morning you are due to jet away for your long-planned break and what can you do?

Firstly, make sure you have travel insurance in place that covers this from the day you book your trip. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts. If snow is predicted, take this seriously and if you have a morning flight, stay at an airport hotel the night before so you are onsite and download the airline app onto your mobile so you can keep a check on any delays or cancellations.
