Time For A Bit Of R&R

It seems like ages since I was last on holiday, but not long now!  On Monday I will be sailing to the Norwegian Fjords for a week of pure rest, sightseeing and maybe a drink or two, I can’t wait!  We were due to go to the Baltic in July however we found out we are going to be grandparents that very month so promptly cancelled that one and decided on this one instead.

There is a lot to be said for cruising round the Fjords.  I think the Baltic cruises probably are favoured by many but don’t be fooled. The Norwegian fjords are beautiful. They may not have the wonderful history and heritage of places like St Petersburg however, they do have the most amazing scenery, waterfalls, and picturesque villages.

My cruise is taking in Bergen which is a lovely port. Full of museums, shops and restaurants, as well as the funicular, which climbs up Mt. Floyen to offer scenic views. Then we are off to Geiranger. We have booked a excursion on a dinghy to “speed” across the fjord – I must have been mad to book as I know I will be scared but it sounds great (will let you know when i come back!) After Geiranger we are off to Alesund. This lovely destination is actually at the mouth of Geiranger fjord and some people consider it to be one of the best places to visit. It is built on a row of islands extending out into the ocean, but it’s most famous for its beautiful architecture, . You see, after a fire destroyed the city in 1904 it was rebuilt in the vibrant Art Nouveau style. Our last destination is Stavanger. Looking at Stavanger you would think it is purely an industrial destination however it does have the old part with wooden houses and a fantastic harbour area.

My cruise is only taking in these destinations which is fine for me but there are other Fjord cruises that take in alot more such as Flam, which really is a lovely place. The fabulous scenery, clean air and people are all part of taking a Norwegian Fjord cruise, the only thing which you need to be aware of is the cost of a beer or coffee – Norway is very expensive.

I will let you all know how it went when I get back.

Till next time x
