Going Solo

Why do I have to pay double for single occupancy?” I get asked that question so many times.  The biggest hurdle for a single passenger is the dreaded single supplement.  Because most cruise lines do not offer many cabins for 1 or because they sell out quickly, they will typically charge extra. This can range anywhere from 10% to 100% of the cruise fare.  My recommendation is to always try and book early. With that in mind, here are my suggestions for  single cruisers.

NCL.  The Norwegian Epic was the 1st ship to feature single studio cabins which are targeted and priced for the single market. They have followed suit with the Breakaway and Getaway and the new build Escape will also feature these.  The studio cabins are priced purely for single travellers with no supplement to pay.

Fred Olsen cruises have dedicated cabins for single passengers which carry no supplement and have recently waived the supplements on “some” twin graded cabins.

Royal Caribbean Cruises. The new Quantam Of The Seas and Anthem Of The Seas will feature 2 categories of staterooms for the single traveller. 16 inside studios will feature the brand new virtual balconies. These staterooms will carry no supplement.

P&O cruises.  The Azura offers 18 single cabins and the new Britannia ship offers 27. There are of course other P&O ships which also have single cabins.  These cabins are purely priced for 1 person but do sell out very quickly.

Of course sometimes you cant always book in advance therefore, I am afraid to say, be prepared to pay more. You may see a cruise advertised at £899.00, don’t automatically think this is the single rate, the reality is it will be doubled.

Hopefully the cruise lines will change this in the future with newer ships being built and a ever expanding market, I hope so.

  1. It is very annoying when cruises are advertised with various upgrades for ‘doubles’, yet have huge single supplements. I have looked at one today to the Caribbean where ALL cabins being upgraded to balcony.
Are the inside and outside cabins being left empty? These could be offered as single with a fair supplement. It would help if all cruise agents showed the single prices.
