It’s Official – We Brits just love to Cruise

I was extremely pleased to hear that reports confirm the British cruise market in 2017 has increased by 4.3% with 1,971,000 cruise passengers deciding to cruise.

The senior vice-president membership and CLIA UK and Ireland director, Andy Harmer, said “We are thrilled to see the continued growth of the British cruise industry. This is a strong performance from the UK and Ireland market and indicates that it’s highly likely the total for 2018 will surpass two million for the first time. There has never been a better time to take a cruise, thanks to a wider choice of ships, itinerary and style of cruise than ever before, and an unprecedented number of ships on the global order book.’’

I certainly agree with Mr. Harmer’s statement, there really has never been a better time to cruise. There is a cruise available for all passengers- young or old, couples or singles, groups or families. With such a wide variety of ships and itineraries to choose from the hardest decision is which ship and where to cruise to first!

With many Cruise lines offering the option of drinks packages, this has also assisted the growth as it is good value for money. There is so much that is included in a cruise when compared to a land-based holiday, this can make it more affordable and much more appealing.

So where do we like to cruise?

The Mediterranean still remains the firm favourite with the UK and Ireland Market holding 37% of the market. Followed then by Northern Europe, Caribbean, and Alaska.

It was also fantastic to read that there is such a wide range in age groups that are continuing to grow in the cruise market. Cruisers taking more than one cruise a year were generally 50+ age group, however, what was interesting to read is this age group are increasing sailing to more adventurous destinations such as Asia, China, Galapagos and Polar Regions with booking up more than one third for cruisers in their 60s and 70s.

The growth for the younger Market was in Northern Europe and the Caribbean, with many choosing to cruise to alternative destinations instead of the more popular Mediterranean itineraries.

Mr. Harmer concluded: “We are delighted with this trend, which indicates a solidifying of consumer confidence, as people are prepared to commit to a cruise in advance. “
