With a name that’s inspired by the Latin word for love, AmaWaterways is a cruise line that puts a little love into every aspect of the cruising experience! Their enthusiasm shines through both in terms of attention to detail and customer service – passengers are limited to 164 to make way for larger staterooms with twin balconies and personalised amenities. The strategy’s paid off, as they’ve won a bevy of awards including ‘Best Overall’ in Town & Country River Cruise Awards.
This family-owned business operates river cruises through the heart of Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe. The line was founded in 2002, launching their service with the European river cruises that remain exceedingly popular today. Explore legendary waterways like the Danube, Seine, Rhine, and Douro, or navigate your way around the Black Sea. Within Southeast Asia you can enjoy an enriching experience along the Mekong, winding your way through Vietnam and Cambodia past floating markets, rice paddies and beautiful beaches.
Wine lovers won’t want to miss AmaWaterways’ unique Wine Cruises, which lend an extra layer of discovery and excitement to their most popular European itineraries. These tours include wine tastings and culinary excursions in each port of call, allowing you to learn more about how the wine is sourced and made in each region.

Service charges are not mandatory but are left up to your own discretion. There’s a high staff-to-guest ratio at AmaWaterways, which means you’re ensured top-notch service. The line recommends tipping 3 Euros per passenger each day for the Cruise Manager and 12 Euros per day for the crew members when travelling within Europe. Within Vietnam and Cambodia, they recommend $2 per day to Cruise Directors and $10 per day to the crew.
Like many river cruise lines, the atmosphere at AmaWaterways is generally relaxed. However, there is an upscale ambience to the ships particularly in the evening when a ‘country club casual’ dress code is recommended. Linen suits, summery dresses or polo shirts with slacks would be a good fit. There is a Captain’s Dinner held on most itineraries which gives you the chance to flex your fashion muscles with dressier options, like suits and ties for men and cocktail dresses or gowns for women.
"Now, excellent service is all part of a river cruise, but what I found outstanding about Ama was the friendliness of the staff. They were a delight! The happiest ship I have never been on."
"The cabins are very comfortable and well equipped with all the essentials to ensure a comfortable stay. The food is first class as well. Nothing was too much trouble to any of the staff."

If your idea of an inspiring holiday combines good company and great food, AmaWaterways ticks all the boxes! This cruise line has even been recognised by the prestigious La Chaine des Rotisseurs culinary society for their efforts. Visit the onboard Chef’s Table restaurant to watch master chefs work their magic right in front of you. Each meal is paired with premium local bottles of wine, and you can snack on delectable little tapas in between meals if you’re feeling peckish.
Visit the main dining room for innovative fare that matches your itinerary, whether it’s French cuisine as you cruise along the Seine or Portuguese tapas as you sail the Douro. Breakfast and lunch include a tempting buffet spread with made-to-order hot dishes and plenty of fresh fruits, salads, and flaky pastries to round out the offerings. Dining is open seating, allowing you to sit with your preferred party or mix and mingle with new friends.
Cruises are all-inclusive, so there’s no need to purchase a separate drinks package in order to enjoy your beverages of choice. Lunch and dinner services include free unlimited beer and wine, with specialty bottles carefully chosen to complement the region and cuisine of the day. Outside of meal times, you can purchase beverages by the glass in any of the onboard bars and lounges. There’s also a selection of sparkling wine and juice during the breakfast service to start your day off right, as well as plenty of soft drinks, bottled water, tea and coffee available on the ship.
The attention to customised details means that you’ll be able to choose a programme of excursions to best suit your own interests in each port of call. You’ll be presented with a menu of options, all included in the cruise fare. Naturally, this includes a city tour showing off any major highlights or must-see attractions. Yet once you’ve ticked all the prime sights off your list, you can also tour off the beaten path to engage in a food and drink tasting session, visit to an art gallery, or cycling excursion. Many tours allow you to choose the pace as well as the sights, whether you prefer a gentle stroll or active hike. AmaWaterways cruises feature a whole fleet of complimentary bicycles at your disposal, so you can explore on foot or by two-wheeler as you like.
Evenings bring a lively atmosphere and plenty of entertainment to finish off the day. The programming complements your itinerary, so you might listen to traditional Bavarian music in Germany or a Hungarian string quartet as you navigate down the Danube. Live music, dancing, and theatrical performances are all on the docket to keep your evenings occupied with culture. The main lounge includes a bar, piano and dance floor ensuring plenty of options!
Paring down the passenger list means that there’s a ton of space for upscale amenities onboard each AmaWaterways ship. This starts with the staterooms, which were the first of their kind to include a unique twin balcony design. Admire the views and soak up the sunshine from both a French balcony and outside balcony in your luxury room or suite. You’ll be able to relax with the in-room entertainment system, including a selection of movies, music, television programming and high-speed internet. Bottled water is available in all rooms, as well as plush bedding and terry bathrobes.
If you’re able to tear yourself away from the comfort of your room, you can enjoy the heated pool, whirlpool and fitness centre. There’s nothing like admiring the view from the sun deck or enjoying a cocktail from the swim-up bar to start feeling those vacation vibes! Book a massage or beauty treatment, challenge a friend to giant chess, or hire on onboard bicycle to explore.
