Are You Fit to Cruise?

Despite the endless eating and drinking opportunities at sea and the average cruise ship buffet containing 1500-2500 calories cruises don’t have to be all about stuffing yourself at the buffet and knocking back one too many cocktails—the latest cruise trips and ships offer plenty of healthy options, such as trendy fitness classes, luxe spa treatments, and gourmet (yet healthful) dishes

The gym used to be a quiet haven – hardly ever used – how the times have changed!!

If you are a gym bunny or yoga buff, want to lose weight or just have fun on board a cruise is a great place for a workout or holistic experience. It’s a sign of the times that more cruise lines are focusing on ‘wellness at sea’ programmes including yoga, meditation and tai chi classes

MSC Cruises is meeting strong, growing demand for wellness travel by introducing an exclusive Wellness Experience, developed in partnership with Technogym, enabling guests to combine discovery and culture with their personal health goals to reinvigorate the body and soul including a health check and body analysis with a Personal Trainer

Shore excursions have been designed complement the on-board fitness programme and  wide range of delicious and balanced wellness menu options have been developed in partnership with the Technogym’s team of nutrition experts

How to Minimize the damage!

Princess  cruises Zumba classes and NCL pilates and boot camp sessions have been a big hit for those passengers  not wanting to pile on the pounds on board. There is a complimentary fitness center on every modern ship with access to free weights, weight machines, treadmills, exercise bikes and more.  There are also optional fitness classes that can really get your cardio going, albeit for an additional cost.

Do not assume what is on the menu is the only food available to you.  When dining in the main dining room or even the Buffet you can always ask for something else that is more suitable for your diet.  Assuming they have the ingredients on board chefs are extremely helpful in accommodating these sorts of requests.

You might order a dish on the menu, but with a different preparation (no salt or grilled instead of fried). I always order a serving of Indian curry with my main dining room dinners because I prefer Indian cuisine, and they tend to be a healthier choice too.

So my advice is to download the App or get your Fit Bit on and if all else fails take the stairs and hit the dance floor to boogie away the calories!
