Eating the Gherkin, Shard, Big Ben and a Telephone box

One of my favourite things to do when I have an afternoon off is to go for afternoon tea with my mother and sister. For my birthday we went to the Mary Poppins afternoon tea at the Shard and last Saturday was my sisters birthday and I had booked for us to go to to the Kensington Hotel in London to have their new Landmarks afternoon tea.

The menu is as follows:

SAVOURIES
Colston Bassett Stilton & broccoli quiche
Steak & London ale pie
Crab cake tartar sauce, caper

SANDWICHES
Campbells & Company smoked salmon
lovage pesto, cream cheese on brown bread

Coronation chicken on brown bread

Egg & cress bridge roll

Marinated cucumber
crème fraîche, pepper on white loaf

SWEETS
The Gherkin
White chocolate, dark chocolate ganache

The Shard
Carrot cake, milk chocolate

Red Telephone Box
Rhubarb mousse

Big Ben
Lemon curd tart

Fruit & Plain Scones
Heather Hills strawberry jam, clotted cream

We opted for a glass of champagne with our afternoon tea and then there was a wide choice of teas which included a white tea, black teas, green teas and herbal teas. If you don’t drink tea then you can choose to have a coffee including cappuccinos, lattes etc or you could swap for a glass of fruit juice.

Our starters came out warm and we all thoroughly enjoyed them, and all the flavours were very apparent when eating them, my favourite was the stilton and broccoli quiche.

Our sandwiches and cakes then came out on the cake stand the hotel has had specially made for the afternoon tea and is in the shape of the London Eye. Our host then opened up a map and explained the concept of the afternoon tea – the blue shelves on the cake stand were to represent the River Thames, the long bridge roll was to represent London Bridge. The modules and segments of the London Eye cake stand represent the 12 markets of London. All the ingredients can be found in Covent and Borough market.

If there were any sandwiches you didn’t like they were accommodating in offering swaps, very attentive to allergies and any uneaten items were happily offered to be taken home in a beautiful box. The staff also offered to take photos with the cake stand before you even had to ask.

I had mentioned it was my sisters birthday and on the table when we sat down was a card for her with 2 postcards, then she was presented with a rose, once our cake stands had come out she was then presented a slice of cake with happy birthday piped on the plate, and then lastly a happy birthday rosette.

This was an afternoon tea we all thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.  We did not feel rushed in any capacity or to pay the bill so if you are going to London and looking for something special then definitely consider this.

Have a great couple of weeks
