Ducks are taking over the ships

This week I found out there was a cruising craze I had never heard of which now happens on most cruises and involves rubber ducks – yep those little things you buy to bob up and down in the bath,  well it appears they are now taking over by hiding around the cruise ships and its something that’s great fun with lots of people now joining in. So what is this craze all about – its simply people are hiding rubber ducks over cruise ships and are either rehiding them or keeping them – you choose.

Those people who are choosing to buy ducks in advance are then making tags for them like little passports – which states which ship and sail date they were hidden on, and also has the name of the person who hides it.  They are then hidden around the ship for people to find and the ducks can be any size and do not have to be plain yellow but can be decorated ones if the hider decides. Those who find them then get to choose either to keep the duck themselves or to rehide the duck.  There is one main rule which is that the ducks cannot be hidden in the shops onboard as they do not want to encourage children to just take things from shops

I didn’t realise how big this was until I joined a Facebook group and saw hundreds of posts from people showing the ducks and tags they are about to hide or the ones they have found. Reading the posts a lot of them do seem to be on the American cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean but does seem to be increasing so I wonder if this will have caught on over here in the UK by the time I sail on Azura at the end of this month as I would love to go hunting for them with my two year old niece as she loves ducks, and whether I should take some to hide myself?

Have you been on any ships and seen this craze or have you even joined in yourself and hidden or found any little ducks?

Have a great couple of weeks

Kerry xx
