Discovering the Spirit of Discovery

At the beginning of this month, I was one of the lucky travel agents who got invited to the trade launch of Saga’s brand new ship – the Spirit of Discovery. Not being of the age to try Saga normally I was excited to see what the ship would be like and learn more about Saga themselves. After meeting my colleagues at St Pancras as we had all travelled from different parts of the UK we caught the train down to Dover where Saga had laid on shuttle buses to take us to the port.

The Spirit of Discovery holds 999 passengers, is 58,250 in tonnage (for those who like that information) and every cabin has a balcony.  The ship certainly does not feel small when you are on board and I was surprised at how many dining options there was – you have the main dining room, the Grill which is the buffet restaurant and then leads out to the Verandah where they serve burgers, steaks, hot dogs etc, then there is two speciality restaurants Coast to Coast (seafood restaurant)  and East to West (serving Asian Cuisine), and not forgetting lastly the Club by Jools – which is a steakhouse created with Jools Holland. All of these are included – no cover charge!

I thought the overall decor of the ship was beautifully done and no loud garish prints anywhere, our cabin was in blue colours and comes with tea and coffee facilities, bathrobes, fabulous toiletries – and the bathroom was a great size with plenty of room and with a fabulous glass shower.

As we were at the launch they had brought on entertainment for us which was a bit of a shame as I would have like to have seen what a Saga client would actually experience – we got a sneak peek at a show in the theatre for 15 mins with their own singers and dancers which was very good and would have liked to see the ending – hopefully they will be still be doing this in 11 years time when I then qualify to sail on Saga.

We were supposed to sail to Bruges but unfortunately, we didn’t, however, the weather was lovely in Dover and we did sail on the second afternoon along the coast to do a sailby Saga’s head office and then went for a cruise partly over to France and back. We took part in Afternoon tea and then it was time to explore more of what the ship had to offer such as the Spa, the bars and lounges – my favourite was the living room which is the atrium of the ship.

Have a great couple of weeks
