Day 5 of our Alaska Adventure – Ketchikan

So day 5 was our last port stop on our Alaska trip and we docked into Ketchikan at 2 pm in the afternoon. On arrival, there was already 4 ships in and we waited for one of the Holland America ships to leave so we could dock.  The weather was stunning and not a cloud to be seen in the sky – which apparently is unusual for Ketchikan as we got told it rains approx 300 days off the year.

We had pre-booked an excursion in this port with the onboard credit we had and wedding presents from our guests – and as my husband has a fear of flying and heights, I decided to help him overcome this by booking to do the float plane trip.  We met our guide on the quayside and had to let them know how much we weighed (so they could get the balance on each aircraft right), however, there was no weight restriction. We then took the bus to Taquan Air’s hangar and were shown the safety video,  On arrival, we were met and told which plane we were going to be in. Some of the planes the pilots told them where to sit but ours was one of the main pilots and said we could sit wherever. Nick got on the plane before me and headed straight for the front seat next to the pilot. I had a seat in the main aircraft which held 9 people

We took off from the water and all had our own headsets to listen to the commentary from the pilot. The views were spectacular as we flew over the mountains still covered in snow before landing on the water in the middle of the fjord. the pilot then allowed us who wanted to walk out on to the wings off the plane. We spent about 15 minutes here looking at the beauty which was around us and then it was time to fly back to base.  We were out for approx 1 hour 45 minutes in total and was a truly memorable experience and well worth the money if you are only going to go maybe once to Ketchikan.

We then were all giving our certificates and then it was time to catch the bus back to Ketchikan. As we all had to be back on board by 6.30pm we then didn’t have long so didn’t make it to the famous creek street and will save that for another time.   We ran along the tourist souvenir shops by the ship – one tip is pick up one of the discount coupon voucher books as some of the shops have free souvenirs if you present them with a coupon.

Day 6 was a relaxing day at sea back through the inside passage watching the scenery from our balcony as we headed to Vancouver to end our epic honeymoon trip.

Have a great couple of weeks – lots more 2020 sailings launching so call me if you want me to book anything
