Day 1 and 2 of our Alaska cruise

The next part of our adventure was our 7 night cruise on board the Celebrity Infinity sailing from Vancouver. We got to the port at Canada Place at 10.30am and shown straight to the check-in desks where there was no queue but was laid out in loyalty levels and then concierge, Aqua class and Suites. Then it was through security – where the security did pull my bag to one side as they were concerned by something in my small carry-on luggage – it appeared the security officer had never seen a travel adaptor where all the different plugs where in a stack. After showing him there was nothing sinister about a travel adaptor it was then on to US Border control. There was a seperate area for US and Canadian citizens and then a queue for all other nationalities. Our passports were scanned to check for the US Esta and then our fingerprints taken, once cleared it was then time for the obligatory embarkation photo and then onto the ship where we were greeted with a welcome glass of champagne. All in all took us half an hour to get on board from arriving at the port, others arriving at the port at 11am onward was reporting it had taken them nearly 2 hours to get on board.

We had got the classic drinks package as part of our promotion  and the bar staff were all very quick to try to upsell us to the premium package for $10 per day plus 18% gratuities. I decided I would as I do like a martini in the evening from the Martini bar but Nick decided to keep his as the classic package.

We had gone for a balcony cabin for a change as it was Alaska and we were on deck 7 which we found a great midship deck to be on. Our cabin steward was lovely and very attentive. We had also booked Celebrity Select dining and online before we boarded had booked to dine at 7pm everyday and this mean’t we could see the second show at 9:15pm.

Day 2 of the cruise was a seaday as we sailed through the Inside passage and there was a complimentary galley tour on the daily programme which I dragged Nick to do (we have done a few so all starting to be similar), the tour then brought you into the Tuscan grille where they had cleverly set up tables for each of the specialty restaurants and staff trying to get you to sign up to dinner. Luckily we had taken this tour as we had prebooked the Tuscan Grill and Qsine and it only came to light as we were passing the Qsine table that they had changed the concept and menu  and was nothing like we had booked or expecting so we then had to cancel our reservation for the meal we had been looking forward to.

On the Alaska cruises the ship had its own resident naturist onboard who did talks in the Theatre about Alaska, the animals the earth etc, and then in Hubbard Glacier gave a documentary of what we could see.

Activities during the sea day included, quizzes, bingo, dance classes, art auctions, health and well being seminars, shop sales, movies on the big screen. The evening show was one of Celebrity’s productions called Broken Strings and a silent disco which I find great fun and was Nick’s first experience – it was an odd place to hold it which was int he Cellar Masters the wine bar.

Also whist sitting by the windows you would often see Whales which would get the whole of the bar excited.

Next time I will tell you all about Day 3 which was Sitka.

Have a great couple of weeks – P&O launch the rest of the ships for summer 2020 this week, and next week is Cunard;s summer 2020 launch so a busy couple of weeks ahead.
