Chasing waterfalls…

Those who have known me for a while, will be familiar with my love of waterfalls, fountains, lakes, rivers, canals, streams, the waves of the ocean and all things wet… so ‘chasing waterfalls’ is definitely something which fills me with delight.

…in fact, on a break to Nerja a few years ago, my family were unwittingly subjected to an afternoon trundling through the waters of the Rio Chillar on a river walk to see the waterfalls, and I already have my eye on a rainforest waterfall adventure for our upcoming visit to Puerto Rico. So, imagine my delight when I discovered that there is a waterfall trail only 30 minutes from our front door!

With the excitement of a child on Christmas morning, I shared my discovery with my family and this Bank Holiday weekend, we made the most of the good weather and headed over to Ingleton, North Yorkshire to enjoy the Ingleton Waterfall Trail.

To be honest, my expectations were fairly low as I couldn’t imagine waterfalls so close to home offering anything in the way of spectacular cascading falls; however I was very much mistaken!

I was also mistaken by quite how long and strenuous the trail would be… and as we climbed rocky steps, crossed various bridges, clambering up and over dales, our trainers muddy and our faces glowing, it soon became apparent that this was quite an intensive trek & not the little waterfall-walk I had imagined.

Nevertheless, we were up for the challenge and the trail was absolutely stunning! A full 4-hours of stunning, but stunning nonetheless!

Despite aching legs and a couple of blisters, it was an absolutely wonderful family day out, where we created some lovely new memories and where the kids were able to enjoy taking photographs for themselves, using the cameras on their very first mobile phones.

All too often, it seems we do not take the time to explore the activities and days out that are close to home. For me, such little adventures offer a welcome respite from day-to-day life, give us the chance to get out & about, breathing in the fresh air, making memories and enjoying quality time as a family…

In fact, such little adventures remind me very much of the quality time we spend together when we are away on holiday exploring new places, and such days out together are a lovely way to ease the wait between our family getaways.

So for me, ‘chasing waterfalls’ is an opportunity to do something a little different from the ‘normal everyday’ and to enjoy quality time with those I love.
