Antigua gets the Josephine treatment, Lets Explore…

So , I have had some friends of mine visit this amazingly beautiful place recently, so I asked him for his view and pinched a picture or two to share with you too.

Phil and Lesley at Shirley Heights Military lookout point

He told me the Island was beautiful with some good shops too. I am sure he enjoyed the views from up there.

I have had a look at what the Islands have to offer and before you are startled by its beauty, thought I would give you the low down….

Antigua is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Ringed with coral reefs, the island is known for its many sandy beaches.

With over 22,000 people living in the Capital St Johns it is a bustling community. St john Harbour is especially good for the bigger cruise ships as it has a very deep Harbour, hence the cruise terminal is here, from there you can explore the 54 miles of beaches and the beautiful views from Shirley Heights of Falmouth harbour and English Harbour.

The English Harbour , Situated on the western entrance to English Harbour is the Fort Berkley, built in 3 stages between 1704 and 1745, it served as the most critical defense to the land locked Harbour , it has an impressive 29 large cannons. From hear you can see the beautiful yachts in Falmouth harbour as well.
Nelsons Dockyard , Absolutely not to be missed! This is the only surviving Georgian naval dockyard in the world.

The museum and several other restored buildings stand as a memorial to Admiral Horatio Nelson and the Royal navy. Originally used for many years during the Caribbean wars with the French, Spanish and Dutch in the 18th and 19th centuries. This National Park houses restaurants, art galleries, boutiques and gift shops. It is also the home of leading yacht charter companies and headquarters for the annual Antigua Sailing Week Regatta. All buildings have been  restored with many fascinating facts and history, detailed on plaques.

The Highest point on the Island is now named after the 44th President of the United States President Obama himself and is a 402 metres from sea level.

The crops grown on Antigua include the famous Black pineapple and , cotton, corn sweet potatoes , with Tabacco as well. These have been traded over the centuries.

Sport the Island is famous for would be cricket. Viv Richards being one of the most famous West Indies captain and the stadium on the island is named after him. there are also 4 golf courses on the island and soccer is becoming very popular.

The currency for the Island is the East Caribbean $ although due to tourism the US $ is widely accepted. There are some fabulous markets and shops to buy the all important gifts to take home.
