Three Christmas Charities and a Chicken

Last weekend saw the 1st of December and with it the start of the Christmas Celebrations. Now it might be my age but it seems that Christmas is getting earlier and earlier and with the 1st falling on a weekend the whole weekend  was all about Christmas.

Now I may sound all Bah Humbug but actually I had a great weekend.

The morning started with a Christmas Craft Fair. My lovely Mum who is far more talented than me, makes beautiful things out of glass and chose this year to sell her wares for the first time ever in a local charity event. She was very nervous and I went along to give moral support and help out. I’m glad to say it was a huge success, she sold lots of stock, plenty was made for the Alzheimer’s Society and I won a candle in the raffle.

On Saturday evening, I attended a Christmas Concert by the Blackwell Concert Band, which is a concert (orchestral) group that my son plays in. They perform every Christmas to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and entertained us with a number of Christmas tunes, a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. I was once again lucky on the raffle and this time won a chicken. Fortunately I’m not a vegetarian.

Sunday morning saw me standing in the middle of nowhere, dressed as Mrs Claus all in the name of charity

This time the charity was Dodford Children’s Farm, a place that offers a break in the country for inner city children. The Santa Dash was part of a morning of running events and I was a marshal for this event (saving my energies for the later 5 mile run.)  I was given responsibility for a section that crosses a road and standing on my own on the edge of the lane at 9 am, dressed as Mrs Claus got me some very strange looks indeed.

The run itself was great fun, with 70 Santa’s from 4 years old upwards dashing down the hill towards me.  Everyone did really well and all seemed to be loving it. It was the first time the event has been staged and I’m hoping they do it again next year.

All in all whilst it seemed early to be starting the festivities (my birthday is coming up and Christmas should never start until after that)! The weekend did get me in the Christmas spirit. I’m glad to have helped raise money for so many good causes, and this weekend I’m looking forward to putting  the decorations up and feasting on my chicken.
