Carnival Time in Cuba

Carnival Cruise Line have just announced a large expansion of it’s Cuba programme for 2019-2020 with 23 new sailings and lots of options for seeing this amazing island.
They will be offering itineraries of 3-5 days in length with a choice of US departures so will particularly appeal to the US guest but also offer British customers a great add on to a Florida holiday. Until recently a mini cruise from Florida has only really offered the Bahamas as an option.

Carnival Triumph will probably be the most popular for the British market with eight cruises of 5 days in length sailing from Fort Lauderdale. They will feature an overnight stay in Havana, a full day in Nassau and a day at Half Moon Cay, both in the Bahamas. For a shorter cruise Carnival Victory will offer 3 day itineraries from Miami with a full day in Miami and Carnival Sensation will also offer an overnight stay in Havana on her 4 day sailings.

To complement the sailings Carnival will give guests almost 20 excursions to choose from and entertainment and activities will be Cuban themed with Havana style parties and salsa lessons.

Havana is one of my favourite places and I was lucky enough to visit Cuba a couple of times during the rule of Fidel Castro. With the trade embargo imposed by the United States it really was so different to anywhere else that I have ever been, 1950’s cars, houses crumbling and real old world charm.

There is plenty to do in Havana, we toured the Ron-Havana Club factory, the amazing El Capitolio building and  of course sampled a Mojito in La Bodeguita Del Medio, also known as Hemingway’s Bar.

With the death of Castro, succession by his brother Raul Castro and the relaxing of the trade embargo in the last few years, change is starting to happen and Cuba will move into the 21st century. However progress is slow and she retains her charm at the moment. I would strongly recommend that if you haven’t been to Havana, then you do so before economics and politics takes over and the island is changed forever.
