Bid for an upgrade.

Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean have announced a new scheme allowing customers to bid for an upgrade.

Once you have booked your cruise you will be able to ‘opt in’ for the Move Up programme via the cruise personaliser as you complete on line check in.

If there are upgrades available on your departure you will be sent an e-mail  45 days before departure with the stateroom options available and you can then make a offer for a higher grade of cabin, you can bid against several cabins in order to increase your chances of success.

You will bid a price per person but if you have more than 2 people in your cabin you will only be charged for the first 2 and won’t pay anything more for passengers 3 and 4 plus you will all keep the promotions confirmed at the time of booking, ie any drinks, on board credit etc.

If you don’t want to wait until close to departure and bid on a cabin you will still be able to look at upgraded before then subject to the cruise lines terms and conditions although Royal Caribbean are currently very strict with their booking terms and often don’t allow customers to upgrade instead telling  them to cancel their existing booking and face cancellation charges and then rebook the upgraded cabin they want. This has always seemed absurd to me and this new promotion will make a big difference.

NCL already promote a very similar scheme which works well and I have had customers who have bid successfully and picked up good upgrades at a fraction of the live market rate. I’m looking forward to seeing how this works.
