Would you decline an upgrade ??

Everyone loves an upgrade and anything that comes free in life! You go to your favourite hotel after booking a standard room and as you are a past guest you get upgraded to a Junior Suite with a sea view, sounds magic? But what about when you book your cruise and you are upgraded from a balcony to a balcony…. wait how is that even an upgrade??? Well to the cruise line it can be. Say you book a balcony cabin towards the aft and you get an email to say your cabin has been moved to another balcony cabin but midship position, to the cruise line this is classed as an upgrade.

When I am booking my customers on any cruise line which offers this option to accept or decline an automatic upgrade I always fully explain what it means, If someone has specifically booked a mid-ship inside cabin as they can get seasick I always pre-warn them that if they say yes to the upgrade they could end up with an oceanview cabin at the bottom of the ship right at the front, they might not but its the chance you take, and you can not decline the new cabin. I have had customers in the past say yes to the upgrade and they want their old cabin back, it’s just not possible as most of the time when the upgrades are done the ship is fully booked.  The good news is you can always say no to an automatic upgrade, you can even opt for only an upgrade to the next category type i.e. outside to Balcony. Most of the time people are happy to be upgraded but I find its the people who are not fussy about the cabin position.

Have you had an automatic upgrade in the past and lived to regret it, or did you end up with something extra special!
