Fred Olsen Secret Cruise “A Mutiny”

This week I was interested to hear of the response of the industries very first Mystery cruise. Fred Olsen sent their Balmoral ship out with a view to surprising guests with a decent low cost cruise described as “undiscovered Gems”

It didn’t go to plan…

for a cruise line winning so many awards for repeat passengers and even more for their incredible destination immersion shore excursions I was shocked to read the reports in the Mail online that the chosen ports have seen a Mutiny on board.

Some passengers have been reported as furious as some of the ports of call were Great Yarmouth in the UK and a port for Amsterdam described by one guest as a council estate.

One couple docked into Great Yarmouth and they could see their house as they lived in the town. they had booked “mystery shore excursions” that no doubt they got refunded for

The also included a day tour in the port of Dunkirk which one customer said is no doubt synonymous with World War 2 and an interesting place to visit but with the September weather it does not feel like a holiday destination.

I thought it was brave but a novel idea to do a mystery cruise as it was no doubt great for repeat customers to have a little more adventure with new itineraries but I have to say i think on a 10-12 night cruise you can do so much more.

Why not a trip into off the beaten track ports in Northern Europe or Scandinavia why not have an overnight in Seville Spain one of the finest destinations in Europe in my opinion.

I have to be honest I feel this has been a learning curve and perhaps a bit of an oversight on Fred Olsen’s part.

the itinerary just did not live up to the excitement of the mystery trip and i’m certain those customers would have been more satisfied if the ports of call reflected their anticipation.
