My Week on the Norwegian Fjords, I didn’t like it?

A week on the Fjords in May, no I didn’t like it at all because I absolutely Loved it! Absolutely fabulous it was. To be honest the weather wasn’t great but this is one destination that is utterly breathtaking in all weathers.

I was in the Fjords in 2010 in March sailing from Trondeim to Tromso where the snow kept falling day and night and utterly breathtaking was the scenery, especially when whilst dog sledding through the forests the snow was falling around you like you had been transported to some kind of winter wonderland.

I sailed on Fred Olsen Balmoral , my third cruise with Fred Olsen and what is great about sailing through the fjords on a smaller ship is that she sails through all the little nooks and crannies of the tinier fjords to get a real feel of the spectacular beauty that surrounds you.

On the 5 night itinerary there were only two ports of call which were Bergen and Eidfjord. First time for me in both of these ports so great to stop and to see what all the fuss is about.

Bergen one of the largest cities in Norway was exactly as I imagined as you see on many of the picture postcards of the little multi coloured houses and the smells of fresh fish being cooked on outdoor stoves by the locals. I wasn’t expecting to see a huge funfair though. Great for the younger generation .

As we disembarked in Bergen we walked five minutes to the entrance of the port only to see a hop off hop on tourist shop offering a day pass which included a trip up the Funicular railway. Great value at £35 per person and just what we wanted to do. You see so much more on the hop on hop off buses.

The funicular railway connects the city centre of Bergen to Mount Floyen where you will find magnificent views of the city and some wonderful picturesque walks too. Definitely a must when in Bergen.

My absolute favourite though was when I woke up Sunday morning , opened my balcony door and was greeted to Eidfjord. Wow Wow Wow is all I could muster as you can see from my photos. this was one place I will never forget. With a population of 921 Eidfjord lies on the Hadangerfjord which is on route between Bergen and Oslo. I could have stayed here for a good few days to recharge my batteries. As I only had a day I decided to book a rib adventure . This gives you an hour on the fjord where your guide will take you to many places around the fjord filling you in on the way of life and how the people live on the mountains. He even shouted his goats over to us, knew them by name and fed them bread. They came to the edge of the water quite eagerly as I think they knew the bread was coming. I loved being on the water and was a fabulous experience and only £60 per person . I booked this 3 months before departure which I am pleased about as this was sold out soon afterwards.

If the rib adventure isn’t what you are looking for then another must see in Eidfjord is the Voringsfossen waterfall. With a fall of 182 metres the water cascades down from the mountain into the valley. I didn’t have time to do this but next time and there will be a next time this is exactly what I will do. I genuinely didn’t want to leave this place it was just magical in every way.

I have added many photos so you can see a little of why this places meant so much.

I would sail back to the Fjords in a heartbeat and no wonder as I can honestly say i book at least a dozen cruises for my customers to the fjords every month.

It has been great writing this blog as this has brought back so many memories from my trip only a few weeks ago.

If you are looking to book the fjords then give me a call 08004086114 and we can have a chat regarding all the possibilities and availability.

Until next time Holly xx
