Shark Week!

Shark Week is television’s longest-running and eagerly awaited summer TV event, delivering all-new groundbreaking shark stories. It is is an annual event, week-long, in July and/or early August, it was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks.

Over time, it grew in popularity and became a hit on the Discovery Channel. Since 2010, it has been the longest-running sky television programming event in history. Broadcast in over 72 countries, it is promoted heavily via social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

It’s something as family we also really look forward to. Last year on the Caribbean Princess, Shark week was a massive feature during our annual family holiday and my children loved it, even the ship was advertising it!  As part of the Discovery at SEA program, Caribbean Princess was the ship in the fleet that was celebrating sharks all summer. She had special themed designed public spaces including elevators, restaurants and casino tables. Guests on board  also got to view programming from Shark Week 2018 including ”Great White Abyss,”.

Children and teens (both mine included) aboard these sailings had shark-themed fun in the newly redesigned Camp Discovery teen and youth centers. Kids ages 3 – 17 turned into their favorite type of shark with glitter tattoos and shark face painting, and created arts and crafts to take home, including shark teeth jewelry and shark clay models. Adults can got into the spirit with specialty cocktails that were carefully curated on board including a Shark Attack Margarita and the tropical Great Blue Shark.

Beyond these Shark Week themed cruises, those that were looking to have their very own Shark Week experiences could book the ultimate adrenaline rush with Animal Planet Exclusive and Recommended excursions such as the Princess Exclusive Great White Shark Diving Encounter in Honolulu or Whale Shark Encounter in La Paz, Mexico.

Princess has designed a variety of activities and games that will challenge adults and kids alike on the myths and interesting facts about sharks. See Shark Week programming on stateroom TVs. Kids can make shark teeth necklaces, learn about animals, space and sharks through a variety of Discovery at Sea games and activities.

The celebrations don’t seem to be just confined to Caribbean cruise ships either. One year later and a day off with my boys , a giant great white is suspended above us in one of Cardiff biggest shopping centres along with a shark cage for my youngest son and I to pose in.

The shark, Brŵs, is really making a splash! Hop into the shark cage on Upper Level Grand Arcade for a selfie this summer and you can  share it on social using #SHARKCDF.  Visit the shark on Saturdays from 10th August to 31st August when there will be exciting activities such as craft workshops and face painting.

Has anyone been brave enough to unleash their inner daredevil and brave a daring shark cage dive and come face-to-face with Great White Sharks? I’d love to hear from you if you have!
