A cruise ship comes to me for a warm Welsh welcome……

i forget sometimes just how busy my home time of Cardiff can be, even more so I forget that its a cruise port! Last week my wife was day off and text me to say a Cruise Ship was in Penarth, just down the road from home! The MS Deutschland passed Penarth Pier and around midday, where she was heading to my lovely city of Cardiff to dock for a short time.

The fairly small ship is 22.400 tons, she can carry up to 513 passengers along with a crew of 260 and has seven passenger accessible decksMS Deutschland is a cruise ship launched in 1998 and owned and operated by Peter Deilmann Cruises until 2015. She is decorated in the 1920’s style as it could be seen in SS Columbus of Norddeutscher Lloyd. The Deutschland brings back nostalgic memories of passengers arriving with large steamer trunks ready to embark on long voyages to far horizons. This superb ship brings back the crystal chandeliers, illuminating the imperial red double height ballroom, cabins with cream coloured wooden panelling, marble brass, fine antiques and paintings.

This isnt the only ship passing through home this year , Cardiff port has been quite busy in 2018 – The full list of cruise ships calling at the port of Cardiff in 2018 is as follows:

Date                              Vessel                        Can be viewed from Cardiff Bay Barrage at:

9th September 2018     Saga Pearl 2               6:30 and 18:30

Passengers can expect a warm welsh welcome before heading off on their travels, passengers can disembark for the day to explore so many wonderful welsh attractions across South Wales. A total of five cruise calls and 3500 passengers will be utilising the port facilities and services provided by ABP South Wales at the port of Cardiff between May and September 2018.  The next cruise ships to look out for will be the Saga Pearl on September 9th 2018.

The great with Cardiff is the ship berths within a 5-10 minute walk to Cardiff Bay which so much to do and there is even a regular boat service to take into the city centre.  that only takes about 10 minutes too and drops you next to Cardiff Castle after sailing passed the Principality Stadium.

I’m biased of course but if you get a chance to visit where on a cruise or for a weekend you’ll have a great time!

Take care, Haydn
