What do you know about Sarande? – The New Kid On The Block!

Holland America, P&O and MSC are just some of the cruise lines visiting the port of Sarande in Albania this summer season. I have to admit it’s a new one on me and I knew absolutely nothing about this port so I decided to do a bit of research which I am going to share with you, did you even know where it is? Me neither, and most people I mention it to don’t.

So first things first, Sarande is in Albania, a coastal town on the Ionian Gulf, situated about 14 kilometres north of the northern most point of Corfu – nice location! It has over 300 days of sunshine a year and it known for it’s deep blue waters, Sound lovely doesn’t it, so what is there to do there for visiting cruisers? Here are my top tips:

Butrint National Park has to be top of the list. A UNESCO World Heritage Centre, famous for it’s monuments, archaeology and nature. Apparently it is an absolute ‘must do’ if you are visiting Sarande and also is home to a beautiful lagoon and wetlands so there is sure to be plenty of wildlife around too.

Lekuresi Castle, looking down on the town of Sarande is also a popular place to visit for it’s views of the town and even further afield. If you love castles and keeps and a jolly good view this might be the excursion for you!

If you are looking for a more relaxing day then Pulebardha Beach might be the place for you, said to be one of the most beautiful beaches on this particular coastline. You can just kick back on the sandy beach and enjoy relaxing in this stunning location.

For the historians among you the Forty Saints Monastery might be of interest. This 6th century monastery has a fascinating  history although sadly is mainly a ruin having been bombed during WW2.

If you fancy sampling the local fare why not just take a stroll long the Prom in Sarande itself and then sample the delicious local seafood at one of the many local restaurants there while you watch the world go by? I often find this is the best way to spend a day in a port, and probably much more relaxing than treking around ruins. It’s what ever floats your particular boat though so I hope I have given you a few ideas if you are calling into Sarande on your cruise this summer.

For now, happy cruising folks!
