Hold onto your hats, here is Dorian

The big story this week is the annual problem of Hurricanes in the Caribbean.

This year it is the slow-moving, category five Dorian – the second-strongest Atlantic hurricane on record. With wind speeds reaching up to 175 miles per hour.

Hurricane Dorian has caused devastation over the northern Bahamas, with winds overturning cars, ripping roofs from homes and tearing power lines down. There are parts of Georgia and South Carolina being evacuated in preparation, and forecasters are warning that Florida is also at risk.

If it continues to follow on its current path, Hurricane Dorian looks like hitting Cape Canaveral by Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. As a direct result of this, Palm Beach County International Airport, Orlando Melbourne International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will cease operations on Monday at noon. Orlando International Airport will not be closing.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy has deployed RFA Mounts Bay to the Bahamas today. The ship brings much-needed aid, as well as building materials, a helicopter and specialist transport equipment.

Thankfully we do not seem to have seen the tragic loss of lives as seen in previous years but one fatality I did hear about was a 7-year-old child.

I feel nothing but sympathy for the poor souls affected by these conditions, a lot of them do not have a lot of money and to have their homes and livelihoods destroyed by the weather is heartbreaking.

We all need to continue booking cruises and holidays in these beautiful destinations as the income from tourism can save their lives. The best time to sail in the Caribbean is through the Winter months, but you can still get some bargains sailing in the “Hurricane Season”. The full hurricane season lasts from June 1st to November 30th for the Atlantic and the Caribbean.

It does not seem to be bothering Donald Trump though as while the Bahamas was being battered by the winds he found time to have a relaxing game of golf.
