By Royal Appointment

The big news from Saga Cruises this week was the official launch of their brand new ship Spirit of Discovery.

This is the first ever New Build from the cruise line and she was launched by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

The ship boasts eight different cabin types, all with balconies. In acknowledgement of the target market, she even offers four different cabin types for solo travellers, standard, superior, deluxe and even a suite.

Honouring the line’s own heritage, the ship’s four top suites are inspired by names connected to the company, including The Sidney De Haan Suite, named after the company founder; The Joseph Meyer Suite is named after the German shipyard founder; while Saga Rose Suite and Saga Ruby Suite are named after the line’s first two ships.

For the “Foodies”, you have a choice of five different restaurants:

The Grand Dining Room – serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

East to West –  popular on the other Saga ships, offering Asian-fusion menu including Chinese, Thai, Indian and Sri Lankan.

Coast to Coast – a first for Saga, a seafood restaurant

The Grill (and the Verandah) – a buffet at lunchtime and evening waiter service including Show Kitchen

The Club by Jools Holland – a 1950s-style supper club. Jools Holland will also be playing live on selected cruises.

It sounds as though Saga are rightly proud of their new flagship ship, stating “Our new luxury ship features the design cues, cuisine and levels of service you expect in the world’s finest boutique hotels. Except here you’ll wake up in a new idyllic location different to the one you went to sleep in.”

After an inaugural cruise around the British Isles, she will spend her time in the Baltic, the Norwegian Fjords, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.
