Saga Cruises Revisited

I first stepped on board a Saga cruise ship in June 2016, which much trepidation as to what kind of experience I would have.  Myself and a couple of colleagues were invited on board the Saga Sapphire whilst she was docked in Dover. You can read my blog about our day here.

Since then Saga Cruises have invested in building 2 brand new ships. Namely the Spirit of Discovery and the Spirit of Adventure.  Great names!  Sadly the Saga Sapphire will be phased out in 2020, to be replaced by the 2 new kids on the block.

So who are Saga?  My preconception if I’m honest, was a floating old peoples home!  How wrong was I!  So here’s a few interesting facts which may surprise you.

Firstly Saga Cruises began its cruising life in 1950 in Folkestone.

Only one passenger has to be over 50yrs of age, others can be younger.  So despite previous misconceptions, Saga cater very nicely for people in their 30s, 40s, as well as over 50’s!

Saga include in the cost of your cruise,  a Chauffeur pick up from within 250 miles of Dover or Southampton.  Any further and there is a small mileage charge.

They have a Price Promise Guarantee, so if they offer the same cruise for less than you paid, they will reduce your cost!                        There’s no upper age limit for insurance and includes many pre-existing illnesses

Dinner is between 7-9pm, so you can choose a leisurely evening meal, rather than be restricted to 1st or 2nd sitting. Wine is included in the price, served at Lunch & Dinner.  Saga also offer  Afternoon Tea – a British tradition!  Cream or Jam first?  They also have some fantastic Speciality restaurants on board – at no extra cost!

Sailing from the UK, Itineraries will include the very popular Mediterranean, Canary Islands,  Norwegian Fjords and further afield to the Caribbean Canada & Alaska!  You can even choose to have a 4 night taster cruise to see if Saga suits your cruising needs.

The Spirit of Discovery will be launching this July 2019. In partnership with Jools Holland who will be playing live on board!                      She will hold 999 passengers and 530 crew. Balcony Cabins number 554, and an incredible 109 Single Occupancy cabins!

The Spirit of Adventure will be launched in August 2020.  With 999 passengers.  554 Balcony Cabins and 100 Single Occupancy cabins.

I think Saga have really upped their game, and will attract a wider age group of discerning passengers with these Boutique Style ships, competitive pricing, packed with lots of extras as standard!
