Britain In The Sun

As I’ve said before, I have recently returned to the UK having lived on the Costa Del Sol these past 7 years, and whilst I was there, was lucky enough to visit Gibraltar many times.

Its a popular cruise destination, and rightly so, as there is so much to see and do whether you only have a couple of hours to spare, or the whole day.  In fact Channel 5 are now running a series of programmes showcasing this little bit of Britain in the sun. Giving us an insight on what life is like to live and work there.

When relatives used to come and visit us, one of the first things they would ask is “can we go to Gibraltar while we’re here?”  I cant tell you how many times I have been up the Cable Cars to see the Apes.  Here’s a baby checking me out!

You need nerves of steel to venture up the Rock on the rickety cable cars.  Its certainly not for the faint hearted!

I prefer to have a private taxi Rock Tour.  Much better value, far more comfortable, and you get to the heart of the Rock, and see so much more on the narrow twisting roads leading to the top.  One of the best views is from Hercules Pillars looking out towards North Africa.

You should go and explore the Great Siege Tunnels,  It was the fourteenth and final siege of Gibraltar, which lasted from July 1779 to February 1783. used  as a stronghold in the 18th Century,  and during the World War II for strong ammunition.  Its full of atmosphere and gives you a real sense of what it must have been like for the soldiers back then.

The views are spectacular, you can see North Africa, the coast of Spain from Algeciras to Marbella on a clear day.  And if you’re brave enough to look down on Gibraltar, you can see the new Marina with its fantastic restaurants and boutique shops.  As well as the beautiful yachts and fishing boats bobbing around in the water.

We took a boat trip to see the wild Dolphins, which was fantastic!  Too many to count, and they swim so close to the boat you can almost reach out and touch them.  Highly recommended!
