2 shocking news articles involving cruise ships..

I was shocked to the core to read of the elderly couple who were attacked and seriously injured recently while enjoying a cruise to the Canary Islands on the Thomson Celebration. It seems that they were the victims of a totally unprovoked assault by a fellow passenger, which has left them both with serious injuries.  The man received series facial injuries whilst the woman suffered spinal injuries, bad enough to require hospital treatment.

The couple’s names have not been released, but the press reports that they are from Teeside , and were treated for their injuries at Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital. Cleveland Police are investigating the incident.

A statement released by the police department said:  “We are liaising with the holiday company and enquiries to identify the suspect are ongoing.”

I cant imagine the trauma and stress this couple must have gone through, and continue to do so, and I wish them both a speedy recovery.

……..and if this wasn’t shocking enough, I was very saddened to hear about another incident,  caused by the adverse weather conditions the country has been suffering recently.which resulted in the death of a man on the Cruise Ship Marco Polo, on its way back to Tilbury from a 42 day cruise to the Caribbean.  The ship, operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages  was hit by a 80mph winds whipping up a freak wave in the English Channel.

Water smashed through a window, injuring a number of the 735  passengers on board. An 85-year-old man and a woman in her 70s were airlifted off the ship. The male passenger later died.  A number of other passengers received minor injuries and were treated on board.

A sad few days for the cruise industry rocked by events completely out of their control.  Thankfully both incidents are extremely rare.  My heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost a loved one, or who have suffered injuries.
