We Built This Cruise On Sausage Rolls….

When you are sailing on your cruise, one of the best parts is the food! They say you can easily gain 1LB a day the food can be that good! Each port you visit, quite often the ships will adapt their menu to offer a sample of the local cuisine, which brings you even closer to the area.

Last week the Azamara Journey stopped at my local port of Newcastle, or the Port of Tyne, and decided to bring the food and culture of Newcastle on board for their 700 strong guests. Now, being a five star luxury boutique cruise ship, you would possibly expect all the food to be high end food that all those fancy chefs make on the television. Normally that is the case. Except when they come to the North East.

Azamara Captain Johannes Tysse decided to offer his passengers something a little different, and ordered them food from the ‘world famous’ Greggs bakery. Greggs who opened their first shop in the heart of Newcastle in 1951, delivered a whole host of their famous treats to the ship, including their infamous sausage rolls. Apparently the cruise director on board is from the North East and had been telling the guests all about Greggs and so the captain put the order in. The passengers on board, I am told, loved it.

I mean, it is Greggs, everyone loves Greggs!

When I first read the news on this, I wasn’t sure how to take it if I am honest. I’m not sure if saying Greggs is a cultural food of the North East is a complement or not. But then I kid you not, they are EVERYWHERE around here. And a suppose it is something completely different for the guests on board. I do hope that on the other ports, the guests got served more than a 99p sausage roll for their XXXX amount of money that they would have paid for the cruise.
