Alaska The Final Frontier – and last leg of my epic trip…

This is the final part of my Alaska/Rockies holiday blog series…

14th May Juneau – We did an organised excursion this morning taking us to the Mendenhall Glacier and a visit to the Salmon Hatchery… after returning to the town and a stroll around the typical tourist shops we took a few hours out to spend at the Red Dog Saloon – as recommended to me by a colleague who used to work on the Cruise ships.. This really is a bar like nothing else – an authentic Saloon with swing doors, sawdust on the floor and a man sat playing singalong songs on the piano.  It was a fantastic atmosphere and an alternative way to spend a few hours rather than returning straight to the ship… I would definitely recommend it (and the Duck Fart shot !!.. 1/3 Kahlua, 1/3 Baileys & 1/3 Crown Royal).

15th May Skagway – and our 2nd Celebrity excursion “To the Summit” a great scenic tour where we caught sight of the White pass Railway and went up to the Alaska Border sign.

16th May Full day cruising but what a way to spend it with an early morning call to experience cruising the Hubbard Glacier.  Now, even after all the Glaciers that we had seen on this holiday this really was something else and we were so lucky with the weather that the captain was able to steer the ship through the small icebergs and we spent almost 2 hours alongside the glacier within 700 metres and saw several lots of calving (falling)  – the photographs never really do this justice but just to stand on deck and take it all in was something that I will never forget.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing – reading in the Solarium, a lovely under cover pool area which is adults only on the ship.  I also took a good look around the rest of the ship of areas not yet seen.  She is really a beautiful ship and Celebrity should be very proud of the re-fit work that has been done.

17th May saw our arrival in to Seward and disembarkation was a very smooth process.  Our flight was an overnight flight from Anchorage so I had booked us on an independent day tour with a later airport drop off.  Anchorage is quite a distance from Seward and you really do need something to fill that last day.  The other draw back is that sadly there are no direct flights from there so we decided to make the most of it and see another American City – Chicago

where we spent a lovely day exploring the sights before our second overnight flight back to London then the Coach journey back to Devon… exhausted but exhilarated from an absolutely amazing holiday and along side hundreds of photos memories to last a lifetime of this real “Bucket List” adventure.

If Alaska is on your “Bucket List” then I hope I have managed to inspire you further and anything that I can help you arrange please do not hesitate to contact me.

For now – always remember – Frankie says Cruise.

xx
