    started a topic Vat

    Vat

This may just be a reminder to some and news to others. Having just returned from a short cruise where the itinerary was to ports that are all in the EU and because we sailed from an Italian port all purchases had 22% VAT applied. There were a lot of disgruntled folk on board that were unaware of this rule. The itinerary only needs to include one non EU port for this rule not to be applied.

It's complicated as the rules are different depending where the cruise starts.

Not all EU countries implemented the same rules

The UK opted out of the regulations.

It became known as the Spanish tax as they were the first to implement it.

UK cruises that visit other EU ports don't attract VAT those that are just UK do.

There is a secondary complication as the cruise lines sometimes implement it wrong as well.

NCL was charging VAT on drinks on Med cruises even on those with prepaid packages.
That got sorted after a while.

NCL make it clear(not really just mention VAT may be charged) on the web site now.

There are other complications even I can't be bothered to investigate.

This should be well known by now it has been going on for years.

this has come up before with references to the legislation.

On the Harmony of the Seas sailing from Southampton they were adding 20% vat to the marked prices in the shops.

I am just asking do the cruise lines/travel agents make this clear in their literature ?

I have only completed 1 Med sailing and fortunately I was all inclusive.

The Italian IVA is only charged on items that you are going to take away rather than consume there and then - i.e. items in the shops are caught but drinks at the bar are not.

I purchased tobacco at Krakow airport last year but I am pretty sure it was the local duty paid price which is a bargain compared to UK prices. I never saw any tobacco on sale at Vienna yesterday but I wasn't really looking.

Apparently not Annie going by the number of complaints we witnessed, another thing that annoyed some was the fact that you could not purchase tobacco nor spirits duty free. This also applied at Marco Polo airport.
