In reality, I bet few people who buy a drinks package are actually in profit by the end of the cruise. Even breaking even would be quite an achievement for most.

Trevor, I am capable of budgeting without buying a drinks package!

    I'm with you Malcolm,

Having just return from a NCL cruise they were offering a package at $49 per day + 15% Grat.

Am I glad I didn't fall for it ..........and I don't consider myself to be just a casual drinker.

Had I have taken the package I would have lost out by $108 on a 9 night cruise...........Wilba

      Hi Wilba
But surely you should have included the price of drinks,,,so we could make our own decisions on whether it is personally worth it or not.The price of the package without knowing the price of drinks means nothing.I believe the drinks prices are high on NCL.

How many Spirit and mixers would you need,,as well as soft drinks (can of Coke),speciality coffee etc,to break even.
It may also give us a clue of how many,,as a non-casual drinker, drinks you had.

PS,Where is the Fish Market in Madeira please?,,,,save me looking for it.

Sorry Malcolm but I disagree, on my last MSC cruise I saved £120 over the 11 nights trip by purchasing my drinks package but much depends on the drinks costs + %gratuities added by the cruise line. Glad you can budget, and so can I, but it is easier when you don't have to worry about this aspect of expenditure.
Hubby and I saved 600 euros on our MSC all inclusive package. I loved the vitamin drinks, fresh oranges and excellent coffees and not forgetting the odd glass of wine The 23 euros a day was excellent value and I could have spent that amount easily without having any alcohol drinks.

I purchased a wine package as I always drink wine at meal times, lunch and dinner, a cocktail most afternoons, two or three double baileys most nights.

What the package doesn't account for is port days when buying drinks ashore and the odd times one turns in early.

Every single drink you miss out on one day you have to double up on the next day to play catch up.

Believe me I never penny pinch on drinks onboard, wines are typically Beringer, Marlborough or Wolfe Blass.

JC Google Maps Funchal. Look for a dual carriagway, (a street really with a river in between) called Rua 31 de Janerio.

to the right is another dual carriageway Rue de Viscon Andia

the market is on the corner of Rue Latino Coelho, 5 or 6 minutes walk from the shuttle bus drop off

Unfortunately with the drinks package my husband doesn't drink alcohol and I only maybe have a couple of glasses of wine in the evening, we do like latte and speciality coffees but unfortunately on the cruises we gave booked for next year MSC & Celebrity if you purchase a non alcoholic package it only seems to have soft drinks + if I decided to take a drinks package my husband has to buy one too!

Welcome back Wilba .... quite agree $49 is approx £30 per day is way too much as opposed to £20 per day with MSC so a big difference so I'm now looking forward to my cruise with them in two weeks time.

                    Hi Kestrel

I can't speak for MSC but for Celebrity when I cruised with them, it was not compulsory for all cabin occupants to take the same package. It is possible the rules have changed.

We certainly didn't get inferior spirits in Cuba, jc. I had Havana Club in my Mojito and Cuba Libra.

Annie is correct. Celebrity does not require everyone in the cabin to have a package. Also, the non alcohol packages include specialty coffees as well as water. The premium NA package has more variety than the classic, but there is quite a choice with either. Virgin cocktails are also included in premium, but I'm not sure about classic.

I have no idea whether drinks packages are good or bad. I have only ever been on one AI holiday and that was after purchasing Celebrity's Premium Alcohol Package for both of us. At nearly £1000 for two weeks it certainly wasn't cheap and I don't even know for sure if we broke even between us.

What I can say is that we thoroughly enjoyed having what we wanted, when we wanted and found it all a bit of a treat. I would do it again, that's for sure.

I prefer it if AI or drinks packages are a choice rather than compulsory but that wouldn't stop me going on an AI ship.

Agree, if we book the spirit for next year we won't be having the all inclusive at that price.

                              Hi Bob
As you say AI should be a choice and most of the people I talked to that have had the drinks package do not look at it as a challenge or a target to beat?
They seem to look on the package as a convenient way to pay for drinks ,as one couple said we bought the package and pre -paid our gratuities ,we will get no more bills to pay other than excursions and we can have a drink any time we wish without thinking of the cost.
