Getting ritzy on the river: Uniworld christen's SS Antoinette

Uniworld christened their brand new vessel over the weekend, in Amsterdam.

'S.S. Antoinette' was built at Holland's Shipyard De Hoop, and is the most innovative ship sailing on Europe's rivers today.

The christening ceremony is reported to have been an intimate affair compared to those we have seen of late - the result of being a family owned and operated company, I expect.

The Tollman family invited just 100 guests -- family and friends, journalists and agents - who were all on hand to hear the 26-piece Amsterdam Brass, and witness godmother - Toni Tollman, name the ship, toast her with a glass of champagne, then release the bottle of champagne [which bounced and didn't break - oops - but two crewmen soon retrieved it and broke it!

The 146-passenger vessel is the Uniworld's most modern and expensive ship. Being 443-foot-long, it is also their largest, with four decks, plus sun deck, and the largest staterooms out of any contemporary river cruise ships operating in Europe.

She also offers an extra innovation in river cruising -- open-air private balconies that, with a touch of switch, raises the glass to create a completely enclosed conservatory during cooler weather...

What do you think? Have you ever been on a river cruise? What was it like?

If not, do you think you'd like to?
