Have you phoned round for any other quotes? We used Gills once but I soon discovered that I could have got a better deal elsewhere. Have you tried this site? It's a free number and worth asking for a quote.

      Good advice Jill!

It's always worth doing a bit of research before you book. You can order the brochures or look online especially at the reviews on this site. Take some of them with a pinch of salt though as it's often the case people haven't done their homework before they booked. It's just like any holiday really find out as much as you can before you go and as Jill says shop around.

Think about the type of ship you'd like, large, medium or small, do you want lavish shows or more relaxed informal entertainment, think about whether you'd like a fixed time to eat every night or just going to eat when you feel like it. Then there's the itinerary to consider. You don't have to get off the ship everywhere, if you do want to explore do you like doing your own thing or are you more comfortable sticking with a booked excursion? The tips are often included in offers from cruise agents, it's always worth asking the question.

I think the research is a big part of the experience, the anticipation is half the fun! Whatever you decide, enjoy it!

just spend a bit more time researching cruiselines, find out about their tipping policies, if they are formal or informal etc. once you have decided what type of cruiselines that you want to go with, then look up intinneries that suit you.

just remember no matter what cruiseline you choose all food is free, except if you book a speciality restaurant, water, tea and coffee is free in the main dining room (MDR) with meals and in the self-service restaurant 24/7. most cruiselines have set dining (6pm and 8.30pm), some also have anytime dining when you can choose what time you want to eat at in the MDR.

you do not have to do any ships tours unless you want to. at most Med ports it is easy to do your own thing, you just go off/on the ship whenever you want....................as long as you are back 30mins before sailaway as the ship will sailaway with you.

all ships have different levels of tips, some are included into the price of the cruise. each cruiseline explains this in the brochures and give a cost per person per day prices. Americian ships also have a 15% service charge added to all drinks.

whatever cruise you choose you will have a great time as you will have nothing to compaire it to. once you find your cruise at a price that you are happy with then book it and sit back and anticipate.

BTW you will also have to factor into the price all the new clothes the wife will have to buy.
don't want to work, just want to cruise.

P&O sound like a good 'fit' although you may well enjoy Royal Caribbean (family orientated at times) and Cunard and Celebrity (more formal, but upmarket nosh).

                        Hi Danny

Food is free on board at either the self service buffet or the main dining room where you will get waiter service. On board you will need to add the cost of tips which are very reasonable on P an O. After this all you need to pay for are drinks and port excursions.

In Barcelona the port shuttle bus will take you to the bottom of La Ramblas for a few euros.

Ventura will have two formal nights a week where you will need a dark suit or dinner jacket to eat in the main dining room.

Sailing from Southampton is a very slick and easy process.

As you are traveling from Southampton and there are no transfers involved just look for the best price, look at the extras like parking or onboard credit. If you think the price is right then just book it.

Then don't look at prices again as you will often find what looks like a better deal

Hiya. We always book through Iglu.co.uk. Wev'e shopped round but they have always been the cheapest we've found, and you can haggle with em if you ring em, or i may just be a cheeky cow. As for tips, you don't have to pay any if you don't want, it's entirely up to you so don't let em bulls**t you into it. You only have to pay tips upfront if you want freedom dining. As for excursions, speak to people whov'e been on the same cruise before, theres usually a cheaper way to see the sights than the excursions but leave plenty of time to get back to the ship or it will leave without you. As for eating when you want, you can. You don't have to go to the main restaurant, you can go to the self service or get room service. And don't worry if you don't fancy getting all togged up for the formal nights, you don't have to go.Go to the self service food places instead,on Ventura and Azura they do themed food nights. We always managed to find something. Try The Beach House. Most things are free, you have to pay a small surcharge for one or two items on the menu but there's enough choice that you don't have to. It's like a normal restaurant, you go and book and they give you a pager and page you when theres a table available. You get served by waiters and the food is really nice. Is there anything else you want to know about either the ship or your destinations or anything else i can give you advice on.
