    Gratuities (non cruise)

    Hi all
Read the article that Pizza Express workers are demonstrating against the company for docking 8% from their tips paid on CC's,,,,,,
These workers are only earning the MW to start with.
The company say it's to pay for the admin of the 'tronc' system.

Is this another scam by companies to reduce the cost of the planned rise in the MW.

While this government takes away workers rights,,,these hardworking people will never win.
What weasel words do the government say about this,,,,nothing, nil, zilch.

Do you think this company will reduce the CEO's bonus by 8% to admin all the prks he gets.

What did Babs say on another thread about spoon fed socialist keeping people on benefits, take the blinkers off Babs, this is the real reason, this is real life.

    Hi JC

I always tip in cash in restaurants for that very reason. I usually settle the bill in cash too 90% of the time.

How is this the government? Surely its the Pizza Express management, or are you blaming the government for increasing the NMW above that planned by Labour

In a previous life I worked as a hotel manager. The staff hates tips being added to the card transaction because the hotel owner never passed down the card grats to the staff.
As for keeping a percentage I see nothing wrong with that, after all the company is charged a percentage of the whole card transaction including the grat. No idea on the actual percentage these days though.

The increase in the NMW to LW is imposing unexpected additional costs on many businesses - so they are trying to recoup them. It is either that way or pass the increases onto the consumer.

Whilst I support the view that gratuities should be a small "thankyou" for pleasant service and that all staff should receive a wage that dosn't rely on it (ditto with cruises),however , I cannot understand why you are blaming the current government.
I suspect that this deduction has been practised by these restaurants for a long time, including under, dare I mention the words... "New Labour"...

                Hi Andy
No,,,I am saying companies are finding ways around paying it,,like this way,or like scrapping long used bonus schemes.

No - however many small businesses don't like it. Someone has to pay for it and guess who ultimately.............

                      Hi Liauq
At one time I believe restaurants used tips given on CC's to top up the MW,,,,in 2009 New Labour banned this practice.
They then started taking a cut from cash tips to top up the MW,,,,New Labour banned this practice also.

What do you think the reply from members would be if they found out 10% of all auto-grats was withheld from cruise staff to pay admin fees?

Sorry to bring cruise grats into it!!!!!!!

So why didn't they ban deductions from credit card "tips" as well as one poster, in the Daily Mail!! said that the practice has gone on in Cafe Rouge for fifteen years?

I assume that whatever tips are added to a CC bill are also subject to a charge to the business. So a business is also paying a percentage on every tip to the CC company. Would it be possible that when a tip is added to a CC bill that the CC charge is ignored

                              Why?

Someone may know the current position, but didn't cc companies charge a commission on the total purchase ? Which presumably includes VAT as well.
