Anthem of the Seas for Technophobes

I'm normally a little critical of the CruiseDot blog content, but this article that they posted on Facebook seems spot on to me!

Those not interested in the technology can still enjoy Anthem of the Seas without being forced to stay connect 24/7 or have a robot make your drinks!

Sorry if it's been posted already Admin! I missed it on here if it has!

From the blog Duncan about 50% is of interest and 50% is not.

Duncan do these Virtual Balconies show the actual outside view as per a real balcony, or just a pretty picture?........Wilba

They are definitely a live feed oriented the same way as the cabin so the movement feels natural. I thought they were 1080p which would look horrible as you go anywhere near it, but I've heard elsewhere that they are 4k panels with a 4k feed so it might not look too bad. They also have sound which you can mute, and they make a point of not showing anything else on it at all so the experience is as immersive as it can be.

It's not for me, but it might be nice for those who opt for an inside cabin?

Hi Duncan, Have all the insides got a virtual balcony or just certain grades of cabin. I understand you can tell what the weather is doing out of them, is that correct? Or have I read it wrong?............................................ .......................Carol

All inside cabins have the virtual balcony regardless of grade. The image is a live feed from a 4k camera facing the same way as the 'window' does, with balcony railings imposed over the top. You can close the curtains on the virtual balcony, and turn it off completely with a remote control, but cannot play anything else on the display other than the external camera view. Because the view is live you can see current weather conditions (and whether the sun has risen/set) using the display.

The ship has multiple cameras to ensure that the feed you get is appropriate for the direction your window faces. This makes sure you don't get seasick when the view does one thing and you feel something completely different.

We have just booked on the Anthem this morning with cruisedot and completed our online check in including uploading photographs for next weeks cruise. Thanks Duncan for the information.

We are in a balcony cabin in July but the kids (18 & 13) are in an inside and I'm just as excited about seeing the virtual balcony as I am our actual balcony. I did read somewhere that the studio inside cabins don't have the large screen but the images are displayed on the TV.

This ship does not appeal to me, too large and for a younger age group.

However the technology does sound very clever, especially the 'vitual balcony'.

Hope all of those sailing on her enjoy the experience.

Thanks for that, Duncan. Very interesting. The ship is too big for my taste but what a wonderful idea to have virtual balconies. Must be great for those with children. Beryl

Yes they do Wilba. We have just come off Anthem anf had one for the first 3 nights. They even have sound which is adjustable.

Looking through the blog, I am more concerned by the fact that the double bed is jammed right up against the wall (the image with the virtual balcony) that means clambering over if you want to get up in the night. Couldnt put up with that for a week.

The one we had Bradbury, there was loads of room on both sides of the bed and at the foot of it. I tried to upload a picture to show but it failed.

How did you enjoy the ship? Have you or do you plan to do a review at all?

Can't wait to hear all about it :D

Was the escape room up and running? This is a newly announced feature that I haven't heard much about at all, but I love escape rooms generally so it's quite an appealing idea on a ship! It might appeal to some of the reluctant cruisers as it's supposedly called 'Escape from the Future'...
