Agreed, it’s just a crazy system but someone is making money out of it.

We have just come off a MSC cruise and can confirm that using a credit card is easy and painless. Like many we use a Halifax Clarity card used only for holidays.

On arrival you simply go to one of the terminals near reception, scan your card and sign on screen. A pre-authorisation of 250 euro and then at the end you receive 2 printouts of your account, sign one and leave in your room and that amount is then withdrawn from your account. I assume if you are a profligate spender they increase the pre-authorisation.

Worth noting that you can link multiple cabins to the same card.

I have never used a Debit card because I enjoy the short interest free the period that comes with the CC, before we automatically pay the full balance.

      Cheers

This is a link to a post I made on the forum re pre authorisation.in April 2011.

The way it operates may have changed since but the principle is the same, as for MSC don't know never cruised with them.

Personally always book and pay with a credit card, making sure credit card is settled in full before interest is added..

          Hi all
The queue on Meraviglia on the last night to get your unspent money back....that queue went all the way around the foyer.

If you notice only 2 people behind the desk,,,sometimes one of them went goodness knows where.

            Hi all.
Another way to get a good deal on currency transactions,i don't know if other lines do it,is,,is to buy OBC as a present to yourself.

Celebrity do it,,but you have to keep your eyes peeled,,,,sometimes they are very slow to adjust their rate.
A few of my last Celebrity cruises i buy $100 of OBC at a rate better than my bank gives,,,any unspent is credited back to your account.

The best was in 2016,just after the referendum when the Pound collapsed against the Dollar,,,,,thanks to a member called Taffy from North Wales,a big Celebrity fan who alerted the forum to the slowness of Celebrity to adjust the rate,,,forum members piled in,,,,,,,,i bought $1000 ,spent about $50 and the rest went back into my account.

Maybe X got their fingers burnt because now,i believe, its a max of $250.
