Questions raised over Carnival Southampton contract

Carnival Cruise Lines has insisted that it is yet to make a decision regarding a major stevedoring contract at Southampton docks, the Southern Daily Echo reports.

Currently, the loading and offloading for the cruise operator's ships in Southampton is conducted by Southampton Cargo Handling (SCH), which has held the contract for 19 years.

But there has been speculation that the firm could be set to lose out with the contract going to a rival operator.

The stevedoring operation of APB, the company which owns Southampton docks, is reportedly one of the rival bidders for the new three-year agreement, alongside Solent Stevedores.

Carnival Cruise Line is the parent company of a number of different cruise operators which use Southampton docks, including P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess, and the contract is one of the largest in the UK.

SCH was formed in the 1980s by unemployed dockworkers who pooled their redundancy money to firm the new company.

Southampton is home to one of the UK's largest cruise ports.

It always staggers me that the fees applied to a cruise leaving Southampton, will this reduce this fee or is this just cost cutting to increase profits?
