    Greasy Pole who remembers it?

Who remembers greasy pole competitions on board ship?
Long since gone I presume due to health and safety.Greasy Pole strapped across the middle of the pool with pillows for "weapons".
My Dad was a champion at this- he used to grab the pole tight with his legs absorb a few wallops from the opposition then hit them with a "killer" blow.

I don't think I ever saw that one. I used to enjoy the crew inter-departmental tug o' war. That was a H&S victim too.

On a recent HAL cruise in the Med, Eurodam was joined by Oosterdam in one port and there was a tug o' war competition on the dock. Oosterdam's ladies team won the first 'tug' (boooooo!!) and then the men of the respective engineering departments had a go. It was all going well for Eurodam until some of Oosterdam's spectators threw bananas under their feet! Absolutely hilarious and all taken in good part.

I've not seen the greasy pole competition but Fred Olsen still do the crew inter-departmental tug of war on long cruises.

          It's always good fun.

            Hi All
On our Connie cruise last July they had an inter departmental water polo match..even the captain joined in and it was great to watch the rivalry between them all.
            No prisoners were taken..

Yup - I have witnessed these polo matches too. The most brutal being the officers v the guests. The guests made a very good attempt at drowning the CD.

Yes I do remember these in my younger days on the old P&O ships, along with knobbly knee competitions, flower making, Hawaiian leis making and proper fancy dress competitions where we would make fantastic costumes out of bed sheets, crepe paper, P&O drinks mats and anything we could lay our hands on.

Yes, we watched water polo, entertainment team v officers when we sailed to the ice barrier on Regent Navigator. Ray Solaire and his team won. OMG it was cold!

Yes, I remember the greasy pole. I thought this was one of the entertaining things done when "crossing the line". But I could be mistaken. Beryl

We have seen these too. Always great fun to watch and I was taken with the Captains special T-shirt with added shoulder boards.

Never seen a Greasy Pole but then perhaps I'm just too young.......
