    Cruise Dot's Bucket list deals

Rising to Neil's challenge of posting a new thread, we are back early from what should have been a 3 week Bucket List package courtesy of Cruisedot.

The first part was an escorted land trip in Vietnam and Cambodia with a company called Wendy Wu.

I have never been to the Far East and had always wanted to visit Vietnam. What we didn't realise was that the itinerary was quite so full on. We had to be up and out of the hotel very early every morning to either see the sights or transfer to an airport in order to fly to out next city. Including the flight home, we did 7 flights in 8 days.

Although we enjoyed the trip, our group (24 of us) were very tired at the end of every day and were looking forward to the cruise that started from Singapore last Sunday.

Unfortunately, my OH was struck down with what he called 'Ho Chi Minh's revenge' just before we reached Singapore.
He was feeling so poorly that we decided to cut our losses and flew home from Singapore rather than transfer to the ship for the cruise.

The experience taught us a lesson i.e. no more long haul flights and to stick to leisurely cruises.

Oh my word Jill! That would be my worst nightmare. We don't do long haul for various reasons, anything more than two and a half hours is, for us, out of the question! You'll be glad to be home to recover from your holiday!

Sorry to hear that Jill but when illness strikes, better to be safe than sorry and welcome home.

For us, it wouldn't have been the flights but the packed itinerary. We still do frequent long haul but factor in many days of rest. In fact earlier this year, on a near 30 day cruise starting in Hong Kong. my husband rested so much he only got off the ship three times.
We still reckoned we'd had a fabulous holiday and came back totally rested.

That's such a shame but there's no place like home if you're unwell. Hope your OH is feeling better now.

I am sorry to hear that you had to cut your holiday short and hope all is well now. There is a tendency for tour companies to try to pack too much into holidays because clients want to see as much as possible without realizing the implications. When we took a China tour we had four internal flights on our 17 day trip, and that was quite tiring enough. Luckily we had a four day cruise in the middle which gave us time to recover. Last week I received an email offering the same destinations in nine days without the cruise. That would be exhausting!

One reason why we opted to make our own arrangements in Japan after a cruise was so we could pace ourselves and did not end our holiday needing to rest. We picked out a few temples and shrines and other attractions in each city and arranged our trains between the cities at sensible times, avoiding rush hours and very early starts. At the end of our trip, we knew we had not seen every possible thing, but we had a good feel for the country and lots of good memories of people we met and the culture we had experienced.

Sorry to hear that you missed the last and likely most relaxing part of your special holiday. Though you probably made the wisest decision to return home early. Hope your OH is now making a good recovery and you are both managing to catch your breath and recover from your hectic travels.

Thanks for the responses and best wishes. I am pleased to say that OH is fine now and we both agree that we did the right thing to come home when we did.

On reflection, we think that had the Vietnam/Cambodia tour been spread over 2 weeks and not just 1, it would not have been so tiring.
Nevertheless, we are glad that we saw what we did, despite losing out on the cruise.

What a shame about your trip, I think you did really well, I'm not sure I could have coped with all those flights like that.

On the plus side, you can start planning again .................................................. .....................Carol

Thanks Sue. We are very lucky and are now looking forward to our 77 night cruise on Boudicca in January from Southampton around S.America.

Absolutely Carol. We were both delighted to land at Heathrow. The added problem we encountered though was that my case hadn't left Singapore. The car that was waiting to drive us home wondered what had happened to us but of course, we had to spend time at the lost luggage counter.
My case was delivered to our home the following day so all's well that ends well.
