Did you know these three things exist on a cruise ship?

Cruise ships come in all shapes and sizes and you may be thinking that you’ve seen most of the ship you’ve most recently sailed on, however, I bet you didn’t know you’ve actually only seen 60%-80% of it!

That’s right folks, you would be absolutely amazed at the amount of space for the crew and of course the galley, and all of the backstage areas to make your cruise and extra special experience!

So this got me thinking, I wonder if there are common places on a cruise ship that not many people know are there?

1: JAIL CELLS!

It’s true! Many cruise ships that sail the seven seas now have either jail cells or special secure cabins to isolate passengers who are causing distress to others or who have been a naughty boy or girl! Usually, about 3 cells are on board where the passenger will be fed and watered before they are disembarked in the next port of call.

2: A MORTUARY!

I’m not going to put a picture up of this one but you know what it looks like anyway. When someone does, unfortunately, pass away on a cruise ship there are well-practiced procedures in place to deal with the outcome. I know for example that Oceana (P&O Cruises) have space for up to 5 bodies. What’s more, is that most people opt to have the body kept on board until the end of the cruise! Possibly to avoid the costs of flying home!

3: MORE Lounges and bars that you’ll never see!

You would be amazed once again at the fantastic facilities that the crew get, a gym, pool area, private bar, private lounges, and even a smoking room are all included in a life at sea career! But then again it’s their life 24hrs a day so they do need somewhere to relax and socialise with other crew members. Games consoles, card games, and computers are all there to interact with and it’s certainly encouraged by the cruise line.

So is there any behind the scenes rooms that took you by surprise? Let me know!

Happy Cruising!
