Tenerife Cruises

A reliable destination for year-round mild temperatures, Tenerife’s original resort town offers plenty of fun in the sun. Puerto de la Cruz has been inn fashion since the 19th century, when it was a Victorian spa destination. Today, it retains the charming boardwalks, open-air plazas and leafy gardens that have long drawn tourists in search of sea, sand and sunshine. Yet there’s a modern edge to Puerto de la Cruz, seen in its trendy bars and family-friendly water parks like Siam Park. Head outside of the city to explore Tenerife’s stunning landscapes, from Mount Teide to hidden beaches.

What You Need To Know About Tenerife

What are the can’t-miss sights in Puerto de la Cruz?

Puerto de la Cruz’s main attractions include its sweeping beaches, which you can easily spend the day on soaking in the sun and playing in the surf. For a unique way to see the town, why not take a Segway tour? These cover the area’s history and give you an action-packed experience. One attraction not to be missed is the Costa Martianez sculpture park, created by famed local artist Cesar Manrique. You can also dive under the waves to explore nearby sites like Radazul, where you’ll see sting rays and cuttlefish. And for those who enjoy plant life, the Botanical Gardens offer 20,000 square metres of waterfalls and exotic orchids.

How can you reach Puerto de la Cruz from the cruise terminal?

Most cruises dock in the town of Santa Cruz, a 40-minute drive from Puerto de la Cruz. Upon arrival at the terminal, you’ll find rental car offices at the Marina. However, Tenerife is easy to navigate by bus – there’s a station a mile along the promenade at Avenida Tres de Mayo. Direct buses are on hand to transport you from Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz in under an hour. Taxis line up at the port gates, but if you’re headed outside of Santa Cruz you’ll need to negotiate the price in advance as they’re not metred beyond the city limits.

When is the best time to visit Puerto de la Cruz?

One of Tenerife’s greatest draws to visitors from abroad is its perfect weather. You can expect reliable sunshine approximately 365 days out of the year, due to the subtropical climate in the Canary Islands. While temperatures drop during December and January, they’re still warm in comparison to other European destinations which makes Puerto de la Cruz a top choice for the Christmas holidays. As a result, the high season runs between November and March to suit those in search of a bit of winter sun. However, you can still enjoy the spring’s mild temperatures, and although it gets hot in August you’ll find plenty of water parks to cool down!

You’re sure to find something to suit every craving in Puerto de la Cruz, because this town boasts over 300 restaurants! Head to historic fishing district La Ranilla to take your pick of rustic taverns and modern bistros, where you can sample local favourites like potatoes in mojo sauce or rabbit stew.

When it comes to nightlife, Puerto de la Cruz aims to please. Start your evening off in Plaza Charco square, where locals sit and sip glasses of rose wine while listening to street musicians play jazz music. Bars and clubs are centred around Avenida Colon and La Ranilla.

Shopping is another prime pastime in the city, whether you’re interested in browsing through an authentic handicraft market or modern shopping mall. For the latter, head to the Martianez Commercial Centre or La Villa CC for deeply discounted goods.

Visitors to Tenerife won’t want to miss a trip to Loro Parque, named for its extensive population of parrots. There are over 1000 of the colourful birds onsite, along with penguin, solphins, and sea lions. Watch the meerkats frolic in their habitat, or come face to face with giant tortoises. To get there, take the free train departing from the Las Vegas hotel.
