Durban Cruises

Although it often is overshadowed by the more famous attractions of Cape Town, Durban has loads to offer! South Africa’s third-largest city has recently been regenerated leading up to the 2010 World Cup, featuring a revamped waterfront area and brand-new stadium. There’s a multicultural influence in Durban, home to residents of Indian, European and Zulu descent. This influence helps create a colourful blend of cuisine and cultures. Whether you spend your time relaxing on its idyllic beaches or viewing exotic plant life in the Botanic Gardens, Durban’s a great place to chill out.

What You Need To Know About Durban

What are the can’t-miss sights in Durban?

It’s hard not to be immediately drawn to Victoria Street Market, which has the look of a Maharaja’s palace from its exterior. Inside is a bustling blend of wares, with stalls featuring produce and crafts from the city’s Zulu, Chinese and Indian communities. It provides a great overview of the city’s multicultural side. For fun in the sun, the uShaka Marine World is a theme park including a shopping mall, water park and aquarium. Get out of town to the PheZulu Safari Park, where you can experience traditional Zulu life and catch a glimpse of the iconic South African wildlife.

How can you reach Durban from the cruise terminal?

Cruise ships use the same port as commercial ships, giving a slightly industrial feel to the terminal. You can walk to the uShaka Marine World from here, with its open-air mall and public transport links. City beaches are also within walking distance from the port, and the city centre is a 15-minute walk away. However for security purposes, it’s recommended to take a taxi to and from the town centre particularly in the evening. Taxis are cheap, safe and reliable, with metered fares. Cruise operators also usually run shuttle buses to uShaka, with additional shuttles headed to Victoria Street Market.

Parking facilities around the cruise terminal

Parking around the cruise terminal can be iffy if you don’t plan ahead. There aren’t many parking spaces, so it can be worth paying for a valet service if you plan to leave your car for the duration of a cruise. Services like ParkVia will pick up your car at the harbour and leave it in a secure, patrolled parking space. Then at the duration of your cruise, you’ll be picked up in your own car. It even gets a car wash so you’ll have it returned in better shape! Otherwise, parking at the port is a first-come, first-served basis at a rate of R120/night.

The city is surrounded by natural beauty. If you have the time to take a day trip, drive outside of town to the Valley of 1,000 Hills. It boasts a network of hills that surround you in all directions, ensuring you’ll want to stop and take photos every few minutes. A bit further afield is the Drakensburg Mountain Range, down the road from the 1,000 hills. Here you can spot ancient rock art, take a hike, or cycle around the peaks and valleys.

With so many different cultures living in this South African melting pot, Durban’s dining scene is fusion food at its finest. There’s a huge Indian expat community here, so expect plenty of spicy curries using freshly caught local seafood. A local favourite is the bunny chow, dishing up curry in a hollowed-out loaf of bread. House of Curries is a top place to try this delectable dish!
