What You Need To Know About Caribbean

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?

The peak time for visitors to the Caribbean is between the months of December and April, when humidity’s low and temperatures are warm. Hot, sunny days give way to breezy evenings so you can make the most of the regional attractions, spending time on the beach and enjoying the onshore nightlife. Hurricane season begins in June, lasting through to November. This time period brings wetter, stickier weather and the chance that your cruise itinerary might be changed due to storms (particularly in September and October). On the bright side, you’ll get the best deals in summer and autumn!

What are the can’t-miss highlights of a Caribbean cruise?

Whether you’re in search of adventure or blissful relaxation, the Caribbean doesn’t disappoint. Top snorkelling and scuba diving destinations include the Cayman Islands, where you can swim with tame stingrays. Additional Caribbean highlights include the famous Piton mountains in St Lucia, made from craggy volcanic materials, or the hiking trails around Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica. You can cruise around in a classic car through Cuba’s Old Havana, or visit the cloud forest in Puerto Rico with its amazing wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, a must-do on any Caribbean itinerary is swimming with the wild pigs on the Bahamas island of Grand Exuma!

Which Caribbean dishes should you try?

Expect the freshest possible seafood and lush tropical fruits during a trip to the Caribbean, often combined in mouth-watering combinations. Local ingredients like plantain, breadfruit, rice, beans and yams are used in abundance. There’s a wide range of influences on the local cuisine from French to Creole and Indian. These vary from island to island, reflecting the area’s colonial history. In the West Indies region, spicy jerk seasoning offers an explosion of flavour, used in preparing fish, pork and most famously chicken. Treat yourself to a fresh fruit salad, with pineapple, banana, coconut and papaya growing in abundance here. And don’t forget to try the locally produced rum!

CARIBBEAN - DID YOU KNOW?

  • Did you know that there are about 7000 islands in the Caribbean region? With so many tiny islets, there’s little chance of you getting bored here. Only 2% of these are inhabited, leaving an abundance of secret coves to explore.
  • Are you interested in learning about the real-life pirates of the Caribbean? Try visiting Anegada reef, which has caused 300 shipwrecks over the years and is thought to be a favoured hideout for pirates.
  • The Caribbean is extraordinarily diverse when it comes to plants and wildlife, giving you the chance to get up close to colourful toucans and lush cloud forests! Tree canopies give way to crashing waterfalls like Jamaica’s Dunn’s River Falls & Park, with its 180 metres of tiered falls.
  • In addition to all the wildlife and natural scenery you’ll see on land, you could also come face to face with humpback whales. The Dominican Republic’s Samana Bay is a hotspot for these magnificent creatures, who come to breed between the months of January and March. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a male humpback’s courting song on a whale watching trip!
  • Although you may associate the Caribbean with rum, it’s also an excellent place to try coffee. Head to the Blue Mountains in Jamaica to sample a cup of java fresh from the source.
