Akureyri Cruises

Akureyri may be Iceland’s second-largest city, but it still feels quite small and intimate with its charming shops, cosy cafes and churches. The undeniable star of the show here, however, is its proximity to the majestic Eyjafjordur Fjord. It’s a recreational hub for sporty types from around Iceland and beyond, drawn to its stunning snow-capped peaks and icy landscapes. Go kayaking or trekking in the summer or skiing in the winter – either way, you can’t beat the views! Within Akureyri you’ll also find some attractions to pass the time, from the local art museum to vibrant botanical gardens.

AKUREYRI - DID YOU KNOW?

The Church of Akureyri is hard to miss with its hilltop position and Art Deco architecture, designed by Gudjon Samuelsson. It’s worth popping in to see quirks like the church’s lavish pipe organ, with over 3,000 pipes, as well as the ship suspended from its ceiling.

Lakes, rivers and waterfalls carve their way through the region. One of the most striking natural attractions here is the Godafoss waterfall, featuring massive falls crashing down in a horseshoe shape as they tumble down the lava rocks. Another watery attraction is Lake Myvatn, with its geothermal hot springs and cinematic landscapes. You may recognise the land around the lake from ‘Game of Thrones’, as it was used for scenes beyond the wall.

On rainy days, why not explore Akureyri’s museums? Whether you prefer fine art or history, there are plenty of exhibitions to keep you busy. Don’t miss the Motorcycle Museum of Iceland, a must-see for anyone who appreciates this motorsport.

This northern city makes an excellent base for spotting some of Iceland’s wildlife, including puffins and seals. Visit Europe’s whale watching capital, Husavik, on a day trip from Akureyri and you’ll spot humpback and minke whales cruising around in the cold Atlantic waters here!
