What is the life of a child worth?

A swimming pool incident has claimed the life of another young life in the past week! Should life guards be employed by the cruise lines or are the parents responsible for their children? What do you think?

A ten year old girl died after drowning in a pool on board Norwegian Gem last week which brings the number of deaths of young children to 4 in just two years!

This awful roll call includes the following:

  • 4 year old on Oasis of the Seas in January 2015
  • 6 year old on Carnival Victory October 2014
  • 6 year old Independence of the Seas May 2014

As well as these deaths a 4 year old was left permanently damaged when cruising on Disney Fantasy in March 2013 with his family. Disney paid out a multi-million dollar settlement to the family and is the only cruise line to employ a lifeguard on its ships but it took the death of a child for them to do this.

As a mother of four my heart goes out to the families of these children but is it really the cruise lines responsibility? If they employ lifeguards then they will be held responsible for any future deaths or injuries whilst on board so why not leave it in the hands of the parents!

Parents seem to lose their natural inhibitions on a cruise and assume that their children are safe. I have seen children in the pools whilst their parents are sunbathing or reading a book. It only takes seconds for a child to drown so parents I beg you please keep a watchful eye on your precious children at all times as your children are your responsibility.

Cruise lines must also shoulder some of the blame and must now be proactive in employing lifeguards to protect their young cruisers, so which line is going to be man enough to do this in the near future.

So I throw the gauntlet to Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines you have already lost a child on your ships. How many more will it take?
