Cruise ship to the rescue!

So often we hear of things going wrong on cruise ships and in fact my last two blogs have done nothing to dispel this, so it is heart-warming and refreshing to hear of a positive side to cruising.

Cunards iconic Queen Mary 2 was en route on one of its transatlantic crossings from New York to Southampton when it answered a distress call from a young Canadian woman, Mylène Paquette, who was attempting to row solo across the Atlantic!

Mylène, who is 83 days into her voyage from Halifax, Canada , to Lorient, France needed to replace some lost items after being hit by the remnants of Atlantic Storm Humberto, not least her satellite phone.

After issuing a request for a few items including the satellite phone and anchor, Queen Mary 2 under the seamanship of Captain Kevin Oprey, arranged a rendezvous mid-Atlantic to help and assist this inspirational woman.

Passengers on board were not left out as the they swarmed the decks to see the rower and the radio conversation between the ship and Mylène  were relayed via the ships public address system.

Captain Kevin Oprey, Master of Queen Mary 2, said: “We are happy to have given assistance to Mylène and help her recover from the damage inflicted by the storm. We wish her the very best of luck with her solo Atlantic rowing adventure.”

Mylène said: “This is a dream come true! For me to see the Queen Mary 2 in the middle of the Atlantic is something I would have never hoped for. I want to thank all of the members of the crew for making this encounter happen.”

Mylène has another two months before she reaches her final destination so on behalf of all of us here at cruise.co.uk we wish her calm seas and safe sailing xxx
