A Sad Goodbye to the Legendary Thomas Cook

The news hit early yesterday morning that the longest-running Travel Agent “Thomas Cook” had ceased trading. More than 150,000 travelers are currently abroad embracing the UK Government to have the biggest repatriation in UK history.

Thomas Cook formed 178 years ago and was the longest-running Travel Agent in the UK. The first holiday was on the 5th of July 1841 and was a one-day train journey from Leicester to a Temperance meeting in Loughborough.

All Thomas Cook holiday are covered by ATOL which protects you as a customer. If you are abroad and no longer have your Thomas Cook flight operating this license will cover you giving you the protection of getting you another flight home.

Some cruise lines such as P&O use charted flights with Thomas Cook Airlines to the Caribbean and are also covered under ATOL. For those customers booked on these Thomas Cook flights will be looked after by P&O as they work very hard to replace these flights using other airlines. Please see the P&O statement below.

Update for P&O guests booked with Thomas Cook

We will be contacting all guests who have current or future P&O Cruises holidays booked through Thomas Cook. All P&O Cruises holidays booked through Thomas Cook will be going ahead as planned. Those travelling on Thomas Cook aircraft on our fly/Caribbean or fly/Mediterranean cruise holidays will also be updated as soon as we have confirmed alternative aircraft.

If you have booked through another cruise line then again you will find similar messages on their respective websites.

If you, or someone you know, has been personally affected by this then we recommend visiting the Thomas Cook CAA webpage. This site contains all of the information and advice that you will need to get through these tough times.

It is such a devastating position to be in not just for the customer’s but also for the 22,000 employee’s who have lost their job’s. I worked as a Manager for the Co-operative travel before it was taken over by Thomas Cook so I met a lot of Thomas Cook staff and also the Ipswich store staff and Manager. It is such a catastrophe to see Thomas Cook has ended like this.
