Viking Sea - New York to the Caribbean
We recently decided to try a Viking ocean cruise that started in New York, sailed to Bermuda and then around the Caribbean, ending in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the years we have experienced many cruise lines, starting with P&O, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity etc and then upgrading to Oceania and Azamara more recently. We have come to realise that we prefer the smaller ships and were keen to compare the quality of the viking experience with Oceania and Azamara. Well , we absolutely loved it, and would happily sail with them again. We booked the lowest grade cabin, they are all balconies on these ships, and it was really lovely. We found it spacious, beautiful decor and a wonderful bed. The bathroom was the most modern and stylish that we have seen on any ship. In fact the whole of the ship was quite beautifully designed and very comfortable. One of the most important aspects of a cruise for us is the standard of the cuisine. Oceania had set a very high level for this, which we thought would be difficult to follow but Viking in many ways even surpassed their standard. Quite simply, the food was fabulous. We particularly loved the Chef's Table restaurant which provided a 5 course tasting menu with paired wines included. The menu changes every few days, we were able to reserve 4 different ones while we were on board and each of them were Michelin star quality. The entertainment in the evenings, whilst low key, was much more than we were anticipating and was very enjoyable. Whilst these cruises are quite expensive, we did feel that we received good value for money as all restaurants, drinks with lunch and dinner, excursion in each port and gratuities are included in the fare. Our only criticism was that the flights, which are included, were not ideal for us. When we next book with Viking we will take more care with that aspect, but one thing for sure is that we will definitely be making another booking.
