Cruises always seemed to be something that were for others and full of old people. Well, I was retiring so I must be old and perhaps a cruise was for me and my wife are ready all. I had a lump sum so thought money is for spending so began researching suitable cruises. I got all the brochures, settled on a Baltic cruise and narrowed it down to four - Crystal, Regent, Silversea and Seabourn. In the end Seabourn won. I booked a 12 day cruise starting in Copenhagen and ending in Stockholm. What a wonderful feeling boarding the ship for the first time. Our cases were taken from us, canapes and champagne handed out. We we're made to feel so special. Even more so when we entered our cabin and saw how big it was. The minibar was stacked with drinks, fruit in the bowl and as though there weren't enough toiletries, we we're supplied with a further selection if goodies to take home. On our trip tound the ship we we're greeted by name everywhere we went. Some may not like this but we found it great. Drinks and nibbles were offered and all quailty products. It was good to dress smartly for dinner but by no means compulsory and there was a more casual restaurant as well. Ali eas certainly impressed when a uniformed officer linked arms and escorted her to our table. The food was exquisite and if you didn't fancy anything from the menu steaks were always available. The shows after the meal were of a very high standard and I took the opportunity to help the magician out. Whilst on sea days there was still plenty to do and afternoon tea at 4 was the highlight of the afternoon. All good so far but the downside. Shore excursions were very expensive for what you get. Much better to book your own on line but be wary, if you do this make sure you are in time for the sailing. You have no come back if you miss it. The other downside was the final transfer from the ship to Stockholm airport was not included. I understand we had paid for everything but obviously not. The lady who arranged transfers on board was quite rude and unhelpful and, although we had spend a rather a lot of money, she would not let us occupy unused seats on the coach back to the Arlanda express terminal. Just a little tight in my opinion.
