We wanted a Cruise that either started or finished in Athens as my daughter lives there. This narrowed down quite quickly to Pullmantur's Horizon from Athens to Trieste, which we got a very good deal on though the convenience was our main reason for choosing it. Embarkation was quick and easy as it was quiet at the time. They tried to sell us the enhanced drinks package but we said we would wait and see how the basic worked. Good move. eg Gin, Gordon's and Larios (Spanish gin) were on the free drinks list as were Grants and Ballantine's whisky. Beer was largely Spanish weather you paid extra or not. We had booked a room with double bed and did not want the twin bed room we were given. This took longer than it should to change rooms - a couple of hours, though it was fine after that. Which brings me to the fact that Pullmantur is a Spanish line promoted at Spanish speakers. We met one other couple of English speakers during our week's cruise. We were thoughtfully placed with them at dinner. Announcements are in Spanish then English so no problem there and staff usually spoke English. We didn't particularly want to go on organised trips which was just as well as they don't put on English speaking trips for less than 10 people. Though I was amused to see one trip from our ship in Zadar where the guide spoke in English with a Spanish interpreter. The lack of other English speakers wasn't a problem but it did mean we were stuck with our own company except at dinner, Service was excellent. Cabin stewards, bars and eating service all great; very few queues at the bars. At one dinner I didn't like my starter so they offered me something else. I didn't like that much either and they offered me another choice, though I declined. I suppose I'm a bit fussy about some things I eat but maybe i was unlucky that night. Restaurant food was OK but not that many choices as half the menu remained unchanged, with the other half changing daily. The last night we ate in the Buffet which had a decent choice, though I would have expected their paella to be better. A Spanish ship serving Spanish speakers, it really ought to be very good. We didn't go to much of the entertainment but did go to the Abba show - decent singing, but dancing, much of it totally irrelevant and some downright odd was a distraction rather than improving the show. They replaced one theatre show with live Spain v Portugal world cup football which filled the place. The itinerary including Corfu, Dubrovnik and Venice was excellent. We didn't find the interesting part of Bar if there is one. The pools were small and not for serious swimmers. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our Cruise but would want to go on one with a few more English speakers next time. Very good value.
